"Where's Scott?" Mom demands as I meet up with her outside of the school.
"I don't know," I say truthfully. "He hasn't been answering my or Stiles' or Deaton's calls or texts all day."
"Great," Mom sighs, throwing her arms down. "Now, I have to go in there with the kid who doesn't have to come and without the kid who does."
"I'm sorry," I apologize as I follow her inside. She pulls out her cell phone and calls Scott. I yawn. It's been a really long day and I've been all over the place. I'm ready to go home, but I know I can't leave with Scott still missing. I follow Mom into Harris' room. Mom's still on the phone, but she sits down in the empty chair.
"Where the hell are you? Get to the school. Now," Mom hangs up angrily.
"How about we get started?" Harris asks.
Mom sighs. "Sure."
"Which one do you want to start with?" Harris narrows his eyes at me.
"How about the kid who could actually show up?" Mom suggests. I slump lower in my seat as I think about all the horrible things Harris could say about me.
"Alright," he says. "Emerson is talkative, she doesn't pay attention most of the time, and she puts forth very little effort on work. I'd like to see her give a little more time to my class. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but with her slipping grade and work ethic getting lower and lower, I'm afraid any further and her attendance at the next parent/teacher conference will be mandatory. She has the potential to be one of my best student if she'd just apply herself."
I cross my arms and lean back in my seat. Way to sugarcoat it, Harris. Mom looks at me.
"Great," she sighs. "And Scott?"
"Lately, Scott's mind has been somewhere else, as has his body. Personally, I think it may have something to do with his home situation," Harris explains.
"Oh, well, personally, I'm not sure what you mean by 'home situation,'" Mom smiles nervously.
"Uh, specifically the lack of an authority figure," Harris tells her.
"Yeah, I'm the authority figure, so ..." Mom purses her lips and furrows her eyebrows.
"Sorry. Allow me to clarify," Harris says. "I mean the lack of a male authority figure."
"Oh, well, trust me," Mom tenses up. "We're much better off without him in the picture."
"Well, does Scott feel the same way?" Harris asks.
"Yes, I think so. I hope so," Mom nods. Both of them look at me.
"Of course he does," I say. "We both do."
"But Scott's going through some difficult changes. He just needs a ... little extra attention," Harris continues. "A guiding hand through this crucial stage of his development."
I roll my eyes. This meeting just could not get done any sooner, could it?
