Mom calls Scott again, this time, much angrier. I follow behind her as she walks out of the school.
"Scott, you need to call me right now," Mom seethes.
I catch sight of Mr. Argent bursting out of the school at the same time as us. He, too, is on the phone and I know, in that moment, that Allison is missing just like Scott.
"Allison, answering your cell phone will make discussing the terms of your grounding much easier," Mr. Argent growls. "Call me back before your punishment reaches biblical proportions."
Mrs. Argent starts talking and mentions Allison's aunt as Mom starts to approach them.
"Kate hasn't heard from her either," Allison's mom tells her husband.
"She doesn't do this," Mr. Argent shakes his head.
"Excuse me, you're not Allison's parents, are you?" Mom asks them. I peer around her at Mrs. Argent. I wonder if she recognizes me from my and Stiles' late-night and creepy check-in on Allison. "I'm Scott's mom and I hate to say it, but he's not answering his phone either."
"You're his mother?" Mr. Argent asks. I cross my arms and sink into one hip at the way he says it.
"Funny how you say that like it's an accusation," Mom picks up on his tone, just like I.
"Well, I wouldn't claim it as a source of pride, since he basically kidnapped my daughter today," Mr. Argent says angrily.
"How do we know skipping school wasn't your daughter's idea?" Mom questions, tilting her head.
"My daughter -" Mr. Argent raises his voice, but stops suddenly. He sighs and looks at something behind me. I turn and see Allison and Scott slinking out of a car. "- is right there."
Mom turns, too, and sees Scott. She turns and hops down the stairs towards him.
"Let's go," Mr. Argent tells his wife. I end up following them down the stairs.
"Where exactly have you been?" Mom demands. I can tell she is furious with my brother and I'm glad that, for once, she's not mad at me too.
"Nowhere, Mom," Scott groans. He looks at me as if this was my fault.
"Nowhere? Meaning not at school," Mom puts her hands on her hips.
"Kinda ..." Scott says quietly and drops his gaze.
"It's not his fault," Allison defends him, her voice soft. "It's my birthday, and we were -"
"Allison," Mr. Argent cuts her off. "In the car."
Before Allison can even move, a girl screams somewhere in the parking lot. Soon, lots of people are yelling and screaming, moving quickly.
"What's happening?" I ask. The five of us look around wildly, but we can't tell what's going on. The shouts become more frantic. Maybe a parent finally lost their patience and attacked Harris and the crowd is just cheering them on? That'd be nice.
But people start hopping in their car and driving away fast. More screaming follows.
"Scott?" I ask as he starts to walk away. I slink after him and watch as Allison walks the other way. We're all looking for the source of the chaos. I see Mr. Argent reach into the back of his vehicle and then a growl floats through the loud parking lot, drawing my attention away. "Scott!" I call out. When I turn to look at him, I see his eyes are glowing yellow, but the growl didn't come from him. "Scott, what is it?"
I follow his gaze and watch in horror as Allison backs away from something and steps right into the way of a car. Scott turns and races at her while the driver honks the horn and slams on the brakes.
"Allison!" Scott yells and grabs her, pulling her out of the way of the car. I run over to them after the car passes. "Are you okay?" Scott asks her. She nods. "Alright."
Another growl sounds through the parking lot and the three of us all jump and look towards the source. I see Sheriff Stilinski pushing his way through the crowd. "Move! Move!" he yells. A car backing out runs into him, knocking him onto his back. He groans and holds up a hand as people rush to his side. "I'm okay."
The growls get louder and Scott and I look at each other. An entire conversation passes without any words being spoken. It's the Alpha. Mr. Stilinski pulls a gun out of his sock and fires at the beast. It snarls loudly in response, but doesn't go down. Scott never once moves from his spot in front of me and Allison. A louder gun shot draws my attention away from the beast. Mr. Argent stands there and watches as the beast falls to the ground. It doesn't make any noise and people start to move closer.
"Excuse me," I push my way around Scott so that I can be in the front of the crowd. Soon, the entire parking lot is gathered around the dead animal. Scott stands next to Mr. Argent and Allison joins them a moment later. The animal laying on the ground is definitely not the Alpha. When I look back at Scott, I find Mom standing behind him. He and Allison's dad are both staring at each other. As I eye the gun in his hands, the realization hits me that he must be a werewolf hunter too. And if he and Kate are both werewolf hunters, then that brings up the chances of Allison being one exponentially. I sigh, looking back at the mountain lion sprawled out on the pavement, and I wonder where it came from. Did the Alpha plant it to draw suspicions away from itself?
