The doorbell rings just as I'm rounding the corner from the stairs, but Mom beats me to the door. To my surprise, it's Allison.
"Hi, Ms. McCall." Allison smiles at her. "Hey, Em," she says when her eyes land on me.
"I'll let you take it from here," Mom tells me, stepping out of the doorway. She appears to be in a rush to do something, but I don't know what.
"You here to see Scott?" I ask and shove my hands in my pockets.
"I, uh - actually, I need to talk to both of you," Allison manages out awkwardly.
"Okay." Worry starts to work its way into me. "Scott's up in his room." I motion towards the stairs, and she follows me up them. I knock on Scott's door.
"Not now, Mom!" he calls from inside.
Allison reaches up to knock the second time, more aggressively.
"I said 'not now'!" Scott says, but I can hear him moving towards the door.
"Sorry," Allison says when he opens the door. "Can we talk?"
The two of us walk in, and we all sit at the foot of Scott's bed. Then, it's silent. I feel as though there's something I should say, but I can't think of anything, so I just wait.
Finally, Scott breaks the silence. "Do you want me to say something first?"
Allison shakes her head. "No. I have something important to tell both of you."
"Okay." Scott drops his shoulders in defeat.
"Do you want me and Em to leave you alone for a few minutes?" he tries again.
"Why would I want that?" she asks, looking at my brother.
"I don't know. It's just that, um ... you came in here and said that you wanted to talk, and we've been sitting here for like ten minutes, and you haven't said anything yet, and it's starting to freak me out," Scott rambles.
"Sorry," Allison laughs. "It's a little hard to start." She looks down at her hands and then back up. "This is going to sound really ridiculous. And I - I guess I just ... I don't want you guys to laugh at me."
"I would never laugh at you," Scott says. Allison looks at him, and how long they stare makes me uncomfortable, like maybe I should leave.
"Do you guys want to be left alone?" I offer.
"No!" Allison says quickly. "I need to tell both of you this. It's about my family."
Scott and I both look at each other. Her hunter family.
"Okay," I say when she just turns her head back and forth to stare at us expectantly.
"A little while ago, I caught them in a lie," Allison explains. "A small one. When my aunt first arrived, she had car trouble, and ... my dad said it was a flat tire, but she said she needed a jump start."
"Maybe it was just a little miscommunication," Scott supplies. I scowl at him while Allison's head was turned. Was he trying to defend them?
"Yeah. That's what I thought, too." Allison turns to look at me, and Scott widens his eyes as soon as she's facing away from him. "And then I found glass on her car like ... the window had been smashed in."
I feel my heart starting to pound faster, and I know Scott can hear it.
"I've been overhearing really strange conversations," Allison adds. "I think some of it has to do with Derek."
"Derek Hale?" I blurt out.
Allison nods.
"Are you sure?" Scott asks.
"Yeah. I think that he's not -"
