The next morning, I hang outside of Scott's door as I brush my teeth. I'm not sure if I should wake him up this morning. As his alarm clock changes from 6:59 to 7:00, the radio starts to play.
" ... beautiful Monday morning, Beacon Hills High School is back open after being closed Thursday and Friday," the radio says. I walk into Scott's room, heading for the alarm clock. "Police search continues for alleged killer Derek Hale -"
Mom turns off his alarm before I can even get there.
"You should probably set this to buzzer," she tells Scott and he starts to wake up. I take my toothbrush out of my mouth and go back to the bathroom. "You alive in there?"
"No," comes Scott's reply.
"Not ready to go back to school?" I hear Mom ask.
"No," Scott repeats.
"You want to stay home another day?"
This was even an option? I peek back into Scott's bedroom.
"No," he says again.
"Want a brand-new car?" Mom asks. Before Scott can even answer, she smiles. "Me, too."
Scott flings the blankets off and sits up.
"This isn't just about what happened at the school, right? I mean, it's about what's-her-name. Do you want to talk about it?" Mom raises her eyebrows as Scott rolls out of bed and stumbles into the bathroom with me.
"Not with you," he answers irritably.
"Hey, I've been through a few breakups myself, you know. I mean, disastrous ones, actually," Mom explains.
"I don't care about your breakups, Mom!" Scott argues. "I'm gonna get her back."
Scott closes the door and nods at me as I spit into the sink.
"You're gonna get her back?" I ask.
"Yes, I am."
