After the visit to the morgue, Scott, Stiles, and I were staking out Derek's place. We were waiting for him to leave so that we could find the body and dig it up. Honestly, I don't know why I go along with these plans. I watch Derek Hale get into his car and as he starts it, I stare at him. He wasn't bad looking, for being a murderer. I still couldn't wrap my mind around that. Derek might act dangerous and menacing and he might be a werewolf, but I still don't believe he could've killed that girl. I watch as he pulls out, wondering if Scott could be wrong. Maybe all blood smells smell the same to him and he just smelled Derek's blood earlier. Maybe he'd cut himself on something sharp and bled? It's possible.
As soon as he left, Stiles pulled the Jeep up. The three of us hopped out, Scott and Stiles armed with shovels. Fortunately for me, there were only two shovels between the McCall and Stilinski households, so I didn't have to do any digging. Scott hands Stiles a flashlight and I follow them, shining my own flashlight around Derek's property.
"Wait," Scott says. "Something's different."
Stiles shines his flashlight over the Hale house. It's burned and falling apart, missing the roof.
"Different how?" Stiles asks, shining the light on a boarded up window.
"I don't know," Scott admits, leading us over to the side of the house. "Let's just get this over with."
Scott plunges the shovel into the ground. Stiles joins him and I keep a lookout for Derek to return. While I do, I study his house more. Does he really live here? In a burnt, hollowed shell of his home? That's more than a little creepy. I start to imagine the inside of the house, charred walls and furniture, ashes spread on the floor. His whole family burned to death inside this very house. Does he seriously live in it? I wonder where he was on the day of the fire. How did he survive? Did he escape?
"This is taking way too long," Scott says after a while.
"Just keep going," Stiles says, continuing to dig.
"What if he comes back?" Scott argues.
"Then we get the hell out of here," Stiles explains. "Besides, Emerson's keeping a lookout."
"Sure am," I chime.
"What if he catches us?" Scott asks.
"I have a plan for that," Stiles tells my brother swiftly.
"Which is?" Scott counters. I don't think I want to know what Stiles' plan is. His plans have a way of, you know, never working.
"You run one way, Emerson and I run the other. Whoever he catches first, too bad," Stiles answers, shrugging.
"I hate that plan," my brother says at the same time I say,
"That's a terrible plan."
Scott and I exchange a look and I offer him a tiny smile. Stiles gives us both a look before they go back to digging. His plan was terrible. Scott's a werewolf now. Obviously, he can run faster than me and Stiles. Then again, maybe Derek would go after Scott because he was a werewolf.
I hear a loud thud and glance over at them.
"Oh! Stop, stop, stop," Stiles says. He hits whatever they found with his shovel and then throws it to the side of the hole. He and Scott start unearthing something with their hands. I stand a good distance back. If there's a dead body in that hole, I do not want to fall in.
"Hurry," Scott says.
"I'm trying," Stiles fires. "Did he have to tie the thing in like 900 knots?"
"I'll do it," Scott says, sounding panicked. Can he sense something me and Stiles can't? Or is he just overreacting because he's scared of Derek? They work at the knots. Then, they both scream and jump backwards. I jump and shriek, almost stumbling down into the hole with them. I take a step backwards before peering carefully into the hole. There's a wolf lying in a sack. Or at least, half a wolf.
"What the hell is that?" Stiles shouts. I want to tell him to be quiet, that if Derek hears us, we're dead, but I can't. My tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth.
"It's a wolf," Scott says in awe.
"Really?" I ask, my tongue magically unsticking itself for a sarcastic comment.
"Yeah, I can see that," Stiles says. "I thought you said you smelled blood, as in human blood."
"I told you something was different," Scott defends himself.
"Why would Derek bury a wolf head?" I ask.
"This doesn't make sense," Stiles agrees.
"We gotta get out of here," Scott states.
"Yeah," Stiles nods. "Okay. Help me cover this up."
I start inching towards the Jeep. Being in the middle of the woods, next to a burnt mansion and a severed wolf head is actually starting to creep me out.
"What's wrong?" my brother asks Stiles when he stops.
"You see that flower?" Stiles points to a tiny, purple thing.
"This is not the time to go flower-picking," I tell Stiles. "Derek could come back any minute."
"What about it?" Scott asks in confusion.
"I think it's wolfsbane," Stiles expands.
"W- What's that?" Scott looks to my best friend.
"Haven't you ever seen The Wolf Man?" Stiles looks at Scott incredulously, as if he can't believe that my brother didn't know. I can already tell he hasn't seen it.
"No," Scott replies, shaking his head.
"Lon Chaney Jr.? Claude Rains? The original, classic werewolf movie?" Stiles tries to ring a bell in Scott's head.
"No! What?" Scott asks, frustrated.
"Just tell him," I order, crossing my arms.
"You are so unprepared for this," Stiles tells him. He gets up and hurries over to the flower. Stiles picks it up and a handful of dirt. As he pulls it out, he reveals a rope running in a circle around the wolf. He keeps pulling until a spiral appears in the upturned dirt. It glows a deep red for just one moment. Scott watches him, clueless, and when he glances in the hole, his eyes widen and his lips form a "o." He stands up and looks shocked. I peek in the hole again, following my brother's gaze. I jump again when I see that it's a girl.
"Stiles," Scott says. Stiles comes and looks in the hole.
"Holy -" he says, jumping back from the edge.
"Is that - Is that the body you saw?" I ask Scott. He nods, looking to Stiles. "That's the dead girl."
