Stiles pulls the Jeep into the school parking lot. The headlights bounce across the grass as the vehicle slows to a stop. Scott and Stiles both jump out and I look around the parking lot for Derek.

"This is a terrible idea," Stiles tells my brother.

"Yeah." Scott sighs. "I know."

"But we're still gonna do it?" Stiles asks. He holds his arms out questioningly.

"Can you think of something better?" Scott demands. I keep my eye on the road, waiting for Derek's car to appear.

"Well, personally, I'm a fan of ignoring a problem until eventually, it just goes away." Stiles motions to problems disappearing by gliding his hand through the air. I roll my eyes at him.

"I don't think the Alpha is going to go away if we just ignore him," I say dryly. I lean against the Jeep, feeling the warm metal through my jeans.

"Just make sure we can get inside," Scott tells Stiles. He opens the back of the Jeep and starts to search through it.

"Is Derek even going to show up?" I wonder aloud.

"He'll be here," Scott assures me. I cross my arms, goosebumps running up and down them. "He's here."

I look over to see headlights shining across Scott. Of course, the moment I look away, he decides to show up. That's just like Derek. The two boys make their way over to the car and I follow them.

"Where's my boss?" Scott demands loudly.

"He's in the back," Derek answers. The three of us peer through the window. Deaton is sprawled across the backseat, tape across his mouth.

"Why was that even necessary?" I inquire. I turn to glare at Derek. I didn't realize he would be bringing Deaton along, still tied up.

"Oh, he looks comfortable," Stiles quips.

"Em, you're staying here with Derek and Deaton. Make sure he doesn't hurt anyone," Scott tells me. He and Stiles turn and walk towards the school.

"Wait – Hey!" Derek calls. "What are you doing?"

"You said I was linked with the Alpha," Scott says. He stops for a moment to look at Derek, but then starts walking away again. "I'm gonna see if you're right."

They disappear inside the school and I watch the empty parking lot. I wait for some secret alarm to go off, signaling that two high schoolers just broke in after hours, but nothing happens. It's quiet.

"What is Scott doing?" Derek asks after a minute.

"You'll see," I hum coldly.

"You're still mad at me," Derek observes.

"I never said I was mad at you," I counter. "But yeah, I'm still mad at you. My boss is still tied up in your backseat, isn't he?"

Derek sighs, but doesn't answer. I try to stay silent, but my mouth starts talking again without permission from my brain.

"You asked me to trust you that you wouldn't kill my boss, but ..." I trail off. "I don't know what you would've done if Scott and I didn't stop you." I keep talking before Derek can speak. "He's not the Alpha," I continue. "You were pretty convinced earlier that the Alpha was another Hale, so why is Deaton even a suspect now? Hmm?" Derek opens his mouth to answer, but I cut him off. "Because of some stupid deer with the sign for vendetta on its side that Deaton was asked about? He's a vet, Derek. He's the closest thing Beacon Hills has to an animal expert. Sheriff Stilinski went to him to ask about mountain lions. It doesn't mean anything."

Derek starts to say something again, but he's interrupted. This time, it's not by me. It's from a shrill, squeaking noise coming out of the P.A. system of the school. Scott's first attempt at howling.

"You've got to be kidding me," Derek deadpans. He cringes and rolls his eyes.

I huff out a breath of air and fold my arms tighter across myself. I would've grabbed a jacket, but I went right from school to the hospital to work to here and there wasn't a stop at home to get one.

I'm watching the school impatiently when something soft hits me in the side of the face. I look down as it slides to the ground. I see it's Derek's jacket. When I glance over at him, he's staring in the other direction, purposefully ignoring me. I huff again as I bend down to pick it up. Shaking the parking lot dirt of it, I pull it over my shoulders.

"Thanks," I murmur, barely audible.

After another minute, a loud noise rattles the entire parking lot. The sound fills my ears and makes them ache. I straighten, my eyes darting around the parking lot. Derek looks around too and moments later, Scott and Stiles are coming out of the doors.

"I'm gonna kill both of you," Derek threatens. "What the hell was that? What are you trying to do? Attract the entire state to the school?"

"Sorry," Scott apologizes. "I didn't know it would be that loud."

"Yeah, it was loud," Stiles nods gleefully. His mouth turns up into a smile. "And it was awesome."

"Shut up," Derek says.

"Don't be such a sour wolf," Stiles says. I smirk.

"What'd you do with him?"

I look over at my brother. He's squinting into the backseat of Derek's car.

"What?" Derek turns around to look at the open back door. "I didn't do anything. You were here the whole time, Emerson -"

A loud growl comes from behind Derek and suddenly the Alpha is behind him. His claws sink into Derek's back and blood begins pouring out of his mouth. My limbs go numb and my veins freeze over. Thankfully, Stiles grabs my arm and drags me after him as he and Scott run for the school.

"But Derek -" I start to protest, looking over my shoulder.

"He's gone, Mer," Stiles gasps out. "Come on!"

We finally reach the school and the two of them pull the doors shut, ducking underneath the window and holding the bars. I crouch down with them, trying to squat and be ready to run again at the same time. My heart pounds and I know the Alpha can hear all of our heartbeats. So, there's no point in hiding, is there? We're doomed.
