As I sleep, I can see flames dancing behind my eyelids. I furrow my eyebrows. I can tell that I'm dreaming, but it doesn't quite sink in. It's like a distant memory or like something I made up. I squint into the flames. There's people in there now. I remind myself that I'm dreaming, but the fear still courses through me. I can't move; it's not one of those dreams. It's the kind where you just stand and observe.

"I'm dreaming."

I say the words out loud, but they still don't have any effect on me. I know what I'm watching. I'm watching Derek's family burn to death.

"It's not real," I remind myself. "This has already happened."

I can hear people screaming and I see hands reaching for me. I try to close my eyes, to stop seeing the flames, but my eyes are already closed – because I'm asleep. I can't cover my ears because the sounds are inside my head. Their screams hurt, but I can't stop them. I remember this. I've been coming here for a while, but forgetting every time I wake up. The torture fades as soon as I return to reality.

And then, suddenly, something else captures my attention. My head turns to the side and I don't see anyone or anything, but I sense it. I sense Jackson Whittemore standing with me and experiencing the same fire.

But that's ridiculous. Why would Jackson, co-captain of the lacrosse team, be watching the Hale family fire with me in my dream?

"Emerson!"

"Jackson?" I shoot up in bed, sweat coating my entire body. My brother crinkles his forehead.

"Jackson?" he echoes. Confusion washes over his features. I look around my room wildly, just for a moment. It's still dark out.

"It was just a dream." I shake my head. "What do you need?"

"Get dressed. We have to help Derek with the Alpha," Scott tells me. I furrow my eyebrows again as I remember my dream.

"The Alpha was in my dream," I recall suddenly. Scott looks at me.

"You had a dream about Jackson and the Alpha?" he clarifies.

"I was watching Derek's family dying and Jackson was there. He was next to me, watching too. But so was the Alpha." I try to put the pieces together as I say them out loud and I know I'm not making any sense, but I don't try to stop the words.

"Is Jackson the Alpha?" Scott looks genuinely concerned for a minute.

"Jackson's not the Alpha," I inform him. I slide out of bed and pull on another layer of clothes. "How are we helping Derek with the Alpha?"

"We're just driving his car to distract the hunters," Scott starts to explain the plan. "The Alpha is at the school right now and Derek wants to try and catch him, but he can't do anything with the hunters following him, so we take his car for a spin."

My stomach does flips when I remember the last time I was in Derek's car. Just remembering the speed makes me want to vomit. "Sounds like fun."
