I watch carefully as Allison screws in an arrow head. A sense of dread washes over me.

"What does that do?" Lydia asks the question we were both thinking.

"We're about to find out." Allison studies the arrow. Satisfied with it, she loads her bow. She draws back and lets the arrow fly without hesitation. It sails through the air and hits a tree, exploding upon impact. Lydia and I both jump back, and I see Allison start.

"What the hell was that?" Lydia asks quietly.

"I don't know," Allison answers, shaking her head.

"Where did you get it from?" I inquire. I cross my arms and shift my weight from foot to foot nervously. I already know the answer.

"I found it." Her vague answer stops me from asking more questions, despite how many I have.

"Well, that was fun." Lydia claps her gloved hands together. "Anymore lethal weapons you wanna try out?"

Before Allison can say anything, a twig snaps and draws all of our attention. We stare in the direction of the sound anxiously. Another branch snaps. The three of us exchange a look, and Allison hands her bow to Lydia.

"Hold this."

"W - What? Why?" Lydia asks.

"Because I thought I heard something," Allison whispers.

"So, what if you heard something?" Lydia watches Allison with knitted eyebrows.

"So, I want to find out what that something is." Allison drops her stuff on the ground. "Don't worry. It's probably nothing." Allison starts to walk away, and I go to follow her, but Lydia grabs my arm.

"Wait! What if that nothing is something and that something is something dangerous?" Lydia asks.

"Shoot it," Allison commands coldly.

Lydia lets out a small whimper and drops her hand from my arm. I begin to go after Allison again.

"Don't leave me!" Lydia shrieks softly. A flash of the Alpha jumping through the video store window flits through my mind.

"I -" I stutter, about to argue for a second before dropping my shoulders in defeat. "Okay."

I can't leave Lydia alone. She may be being a terrible friend right now, but she's also a terrified teenage girl who was traumatized by a murderous monster the last time she was left alone.

We stand in silence, waiting for something to happen or for Allison to come back.

"What happened to your face?" Lydia asks after a minute to break the silence.

I bring my hand up to my cheek instinctively. "I fell in the parking lot."

"You fell?" Lydia sounds doubtful.

"Yeah."

"I could cover that up for you for the winter formal," Lydia offers.

"Okay," I say uncomfortably. "Thanks."

I see Allison coming back through the woods, smiling.

"What was it?" I ask.

"Your brother. He gave me this back for you." She holds up the necklace.

"Oh." I look surprised. "I completely forgot about that." I guess with all of the excitement in my life right now, returning a borrowed necklace slipped my mind.

"Great," Lydia says dryly, smiling. "Can we go shopping now?"
