I start to walk down the hallway slowly, making sure my shoes are as quiet as possible. I feel horrible as soon as the thought crosses my mind, but Scott was right. The Alpha was after him. It'll be too busy looking for my brother than for me. Besides, Scott and Stiles will probably make more noise between the two of them and draw the Alpha to them.
Unless ... Unless he decides to follow me now that I'm alone and defenseless. I don't even have a flashlight. I remember my visions of Allison by the pool and Lydia and Jackson in a hallway. I can't recall which hallway Lydia and Jackson were in, so I start walking towards the pool and trying to calm down.
Allison will be there, I'm sure of it, and two people are better than one. Maybe she'll know where Jackson and Lydia are too. I quicken my pace. My footsteps start to make noise, but it's not too loud, so I continue. I'm coming up to the hallway with the pool area when I hear another set of footsteps behind me. Before I can turn around, I hear a low growl that makes me freeze in my tracks. I turn around slowly to find two red eyes watching me.
"Scott's not here," I say loudly. My voice shakes as I speak even though I tried to sound as courageous as I could. My hands and feet are numb with fear and I wait for the Alpha to charge at me. Instead, it approaches slowly and lazily. "Did you hear me?" I ask, sounding angrier. "I said he's not here!"
The Alpha stands up on two legs and keep advancing towards me. I look around for an escape route, but there's no where I can run that the Alpha won't be able to beat me to. For every terrifying step towards me that the beast takes, I take one back, but soon, my back is pressed up against the cold school wall and I can't go any further. The Alpha hovers in front of me.
"What do you want?" I demand, pressing my shaking, sweaty hands flat against the wall. The cold is shocking against my hot palms. All the Alpha does in response is breathe heavily, snarling with each breath. I set my jaw, the muscles there starting to ache. The Alpha raises its arm, claws extended, and I wait for him to run them through me the way he did to Derek.
Instead, it stops, hanging above his head, before he slowly drops it. He tilts his head while his red eyes never leave me.
"What do you want?" I repeat more forcefully. The Alpha turns, drops to all fours, and runs off down the hallway. All at once, a rush of air leaves my lungs and I gasp for the breath I didn't even know I had been holding. "What. The. Hell."
I turn, running down the hallway as fast as I can. I push open the doors to the pool and spill inside. I see that Allison is already standing by the edge of the water and shining her flashlight around. In the hand not holding the light is her cell phone. She jumps when I burst through the doors and shines the light beam right into my eyes.
"Oh god! Emerson!" She lets out a nervous laugh and bends over in relief. She looks up at me, smiling. "I'm so glad -" she starts. Her face falls in the middle of her sentence. "Hey, what happened?"
I open my mouth to answer, but I was saved by her cell phone ringing. She jumps a mile at the loud noise and then reluctantly answers it.
"Hey," she answers it. "I found Emerson, but not Scott or Stiles." She nods one. "Okay, give me a second and I'll be right there." She hangs up and looks at me. "Come on."
As I'm following her out of the pool, her phone starts to ring again. She glances down at her phone screen. I see the giant letters spelling out 'Stiles.' When did she get Stiles' phone number?
"Stiles?" she answers. Her voice sounds confused.
"It's me," Scott's voice comes over the device. "Where are you?"
"I'm in the school looking for you. Why weren't you at my place?" Allison tells him, waving her flashlight around.
"Where are you right now?" Scott demands.
