It's Wednesday today, which means it's Scott Walker's twenty-third birthday. Unfortunately for him, he had a morning shift. Sheriff Walker wouldn't let him have the day off- I think because the staff wanted to surprise him with a cake.

After that, he had gone to visit his aunt Talulah- who sadly had been admitted to hospital since her health was deteriorating even more. He asked if I wanted to go with him, but I encouraged that he spends the time with his family.

But now, it's nearing the end of the day. Four o'clock. The time that Blondie had insisted on picking me up so we can go to the backyard barbecue Reggie has organised.

He is here now, I know as much just from the knock at my apartment door since he knows all the codes to get in the parking lot and building.

I open the door and am greeted to his smiling face. "Happy Birthday, old man."

He laughs and steps forward into my apartment so I can reach up and kiss him. Both my hands loop around his neck, and his go to my waist- automatically taking my weight off my ankle.

"I'm not old, Lis." He breaks away for only a moment to say this before pressing his lips to mine again, but I'm the one who leans away this time.

"I know you said not to get you anything, but I wanted to." It was one of the reasons I dragged Isla to the mall with me. I'd gone as far as getting Reggie's number and calling him to ask if there was anything in particular Scott needed or wanted.

I haven't celebrated a birthday in a long time, so shopping for a gift is unfamiliar to me. "Please tell me it's you wrapped in a big bow."

My eyes roll at him. I try stepping back to go and get it, though Scott won't let me because of my ankle. I almost yelp when he lifts me an inch or so off the ground and walks into my apartment, settling me back down beside the kitchen island.

Oddly enough, it's where I left his present. The bee is waiting on a box for the end of the day. I don't want him thinking about it all night at the dinner.

"No, but a little birdie helped me out with this one." I hand him the small and rectangular box that's wrapped perfectly- thanks to Isla who came back here to help.

He glances at the box then to me while taking it slowly. "I'm scared. The only little birdie I can think about his Reg, and sometimes he thinks he's funny."

"Hurry up and open it before I take it back." Scott laughs and finally begins to tear at the edges.

Once the beige coloured paper is off, he stares at the labeled box with raised brows. "Annalise." I hate hearing him say my full name in warnings, but this one makes me smile.
