As I step outside Scott Walker's flat, I take a long breath. There's no suitable word I can use to describe how I feel, but all I know is that I so desperately want to go back in there and never leave.
Blondie told me that he needed a minute, I knew the feeling. I can still feel his hand in my hair, twisting it between his fingers, and those sounds he made. My cheeks immediately begin to heat at the memory.
I managed to snap back into my senses, and decided I would wait outside where I could get some air to cool down.
That was until I saw little Halle sitting on the log where I first met her. She's already facing me, and a cute smile is stuck on her face.
Suddenly I felt like a deer caught in headlights. She was out here, not so far away from the flat where I had done what I did in the bathroom with her cousin. My cheeks heated back up straight away.
"Hey Hal. Whatcha' doing out here?" I stalk towards her and glance at the porch. I assumed her mom or Sheriff Walker would be out here with her, but they're not.
The curly haired girl jumps up from the log and slips her hands into the pockets of her denim overalls. "Aunty Natalie said you were here today." It took me a moment to remember that Natalie is Sheriff Walker's name. I'm so use to her title that it's all I know.
"What a nice surprise." I squat down so I'm eye level with her. "Sorry I had to leave so early on your mom's birthday. I would've stayed if I could."
Halle steps forward so that's her short legs graze my knees. Her smile melts to a frown. "What happened to your face and neck?" Those doe like eyes are moving along the blotchy parts of my skin that are a sickly colour.
I try to smile so that she doesn't stay so scared. "Scott and I just ran into a bad guy. It's okay though. We're okay." At that same time, we both hear the door to the flat open and close.
Scott steps out with his cheeks still a pale pink and hands tucked into his pockets. My stomach tightness at the sight of him.
"Hey Halle." He sees the both of us and walks our way. His tiny cousin moves her shoulders inward and turns sheepish with a grin. "How are you?"
She glances at me, her stare lingering for a moment before it goes back to her cousin. "Hi Scott." Is all she says- completely avoiding his question.
"Is your mom still inside?" Halle simply nods. It seems I'm the only one out of us two that has let Blondie into our silent bubble. Despite them being related, she's more comfortable with me than him.
Halle's gazes moves to over my shoulder, and I hear the back door slide open. "There you are." I look over my shoulder to see Sheriff Walker taking a seat on her porch as her sister follows. "I was wondering why you were taking so long."
