"I'll pick you up at five thirty." I tell Halle through the open window. "Have fun."

She flashes a toothy grin and adjusts the sports bag on her shoulder. "See you later." Before walking towards the outdoor courts where she's been playing netball for the last few months.

Scott and I use to go with her to watch her train on Wednesday's, and same with the Saturday morning game. With time she liked being independent at practice and only likes us watching her play. So that's what we do now, she gets dropped off and picked up.

Now that she's eight, she's started to come out of her bubble slightly. There's still a lot of progress to be made, but playing netball was a start. She heard that it was a no contact sport and she liked that idea- despite there definitely being contact in the game.

Halle stays with Scott and I for most nights of the week. It started with one night, then it turned into the whole weekend, then also Monday as well, then Tuesday- she currently spends Tuesday to Saturday night with us.

We had to create a routine to make it easier for Natalie and Carla. Legally, she's under their care, but Scott wants to start the long process of shifting that court paperwork into his name since he's twenty five. He's old enough in the legal system's eyes to be a guardian.

I swing past the precinct on my way home to pick up Scott since he's shift was a little longer than mine. He's waiting out the front for me, so as soon as I pull up he climbs into the car.

"Did you get all your work done?" I ask while he buckles his seatbelt.

"I finished it all about twenty minutes ago." He answers positively, leaning back into the front seat of my car before turning slightly on his side to face me as I drive.

"You should've texted me to pick you up before I dropped Halle off." The Sheriff may not technically be my boss for my job description, but she does have leverage. It's how I scored part time hours that start after I take Halle to school, and end when I go to pick her up.

Scott works similar hours, but he gets paid a lot more than I do since his work is very difficult and private. That way neither of us mind working part time apposed to full time.

"I spent that twenty minutes in an interview with my current boss who is the head of the data and intelligence for not only the Seamville Precinct, but the other four local precincts to us, and he does reporting for Central Intelligence Agency for the country. He's retiring at the end of the month."

My eyebrows raise. "You interviewed for the position?"

"I got the position." It takes everything in me to not slam on the brakes. "Even with only a year and a half experience working with him, he's going to be training me to take over what he does. The pay is double what I earn now, and for the same hours I already do."
