I smell something burning, but something sweet at the same time. I shut my eyes tighter and try to fall asleep again, thinking it's just Scott making breakfast like he always does.
Until he starts to sing, "happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Lis, happy birthday to you."
I both can, and cannot believe him. I open my eyes to the sight of Blondie with a perfectly made pastel green cake. The frosting is a unique shade of jade, very similar to his eyes, and that's why it's my favourite. The candles atop are what I smelt burning.
"Happy Birthday, my love." Scott leans down and kisses my forehead before I sit up on the bed.
"Thank you." I can't wipe the smile from my face. "Did you make this?"
He also sits down, carefully with the cake balanced. "I did. You might want to blow out the candles before they melt."
I do as he says, then he places it down on the beside table. "You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to. We can cut into it tonight." With no warning, Scott stands, puts the cake in the fridge, then returns to the bed where he pulls off his briefs then scoops me from the bed.
I shriek when he walks. "What are you doing?"
"I've made plans for us today, so we're going to bathe then get dressed." He walks through the archway leading to the marbled bathroom, then steps into the bath which seems to already be full and warm. He must've ran it before I woke.
I don't tend to sleep with either any or minimal clothing on when it's just Scott and I. It's why he simply lowers us in without having to take any of my clothes off.
This entire holiday he'd organised requires little clothes. He'd done a perfect job at finding a small and private island where we stay in a cabin on the private beach. There's hardly anyone here since we came so close to New Years. We flew in on the first.
All I've worn this entire trip are bikini's, and occasionally a pair of shorts with it.
"What plans?" I ask and sink deeper into the water to warm myself up before I turn to face Blondie.
"You'll have to wait until they happen to find out."
I hate that answer. I know he'd never plan anything I don't like, and besides, the only other thing on this island to do are the markets run by locals or the small accommodation store which is wear Blondie get's most of our food that isn't from their restaurant.
"Mom, Carla, and I got you a birthday present, but it's back at home waiting for you." Scott tells me while I loop my arms around his neck.
"I told you I didn't want anything. This trip was enough of a gift." It's the first time I've left the state. Or country. It was terrifying being on a plane, but Scott made it much better.
