||Phil's POV||

I say goodbye to Dan, biking back towards my house. I arrive at my place, parking my bike outside. My eyes flash across the street to the two kids playing in the road. The young girl has a full bar, but her brother's is nearly gone.  He's nearly on my side of the street and about to run into the road again. I see where this is headed and just as a large car zooms by I pull him back just in time. "Woah! Thanks man." The 10 year old smiles, looking above my head and cocking his head to the side.

"No problem."

"Whats that above your head?" He questions curiously.

"I saved you. So you have to save someone. You get to see how long people will live. Its a superpower."I smile noticing his eyes light up.

"Cool!" He jumps, smiling widely. If only I were that enthusiastic about this.

"But you can't tell anyone. Its a secret power okay?"

"Awesome! Thanks."

"Be careful." I shout as he runs across the street to his house. I walk back to my house, and inside. "Hey mom, I'm home!"

"How was your second day at school sweetie?" She asks as I walk in, kicking off my shoes.

"It was as good as school can be, I guess."

"Did you make any friends?"

"There's this guy named Dan, The one I told you about yesterday. But that's it."

"Well thats nice. He's welcome over if you two want to hang out."

"Thanks mom." I say, kissing her on the cheek. "I'm gonna go start on homework."

"Okay. Dinner's at 6."

"Kay." I say, rushing up the stairs to my room. I finish my homework and eat dinner, rushing back to my room to see if I can talk to dan.

Me- Hey u alright?

I send the text and wait a while before anxious thoughts come up. I hope he's okay. He probably isn't by his phone, thats all.

Its around eleven when I finally get to bed, laying down and looking at my phone again, getting a bad feeling about Dan. I shake the thought away,  closing my eyes and trying to sleep. Just as I'm about to doze off, theres a bang from outside and a soft knock at the door. I jump out of the bed, checking that my parents didn't wake up before rushing down the stairs. I swing the door open and just as I thought, Dan stands there. Although I didn't expect he'd look the way he does. He's got tear stains on his cheeks and a busted lip. His right eye is bruised and black and he's visibly shaking. "Good Heavens, are you okay? What happened?" I ask, walking outside and closing the door quietly. I don't really want my mother's first impression of Dan to be this way, so I'm gonna hope she doesn't wake up.

"I..I'm sorry." He chokes out, gasping for air in between soft sobs. I stand there a second before leaning forwards and hugging him gently. He wraps his arms around me sobbing into my shirt.

"What happened Dan?" I whisper, trying to figure this out. He pulls away, looking at me before starting.

"Well my dad came home at nine, and he was really drunk. H-he spent the last 2 hours beating me and y-yelling at me. Right before he left he told me that he'll k-kill me if I don't leave. He said he doesn't want to see me at the house for another day. I was going to go sleep at the park but I didn't r-really want to because its cold a-and I thought m-maybe you'd be okay if I stayed the night.. I I know I should've called b-but my phone died. I'm sorry.." He manages to say, words falling from his lips so quickly I hardly had time to process it.

"Okay.. Okay.. It's fine.. You can stay here as long as you want. You're always allowed to stay over, remember? Don't be sorry." I frown at how upset he is, hugging him again and noticing him clam down.

"T-Thank you.." He stutters, wiping his eyes and taking a deep breath.

"Alright, come on." I say softly, opening the front door and gesturing for him to come in. He grabs his backpack and walks in, me right behind him. I lead him to my room, careful not to wake up anyone. "You don't mind if we share a bed right?" I say, as I only have one bed and no where else to sleep.

"No, it's fine." He mumbles, looking down.

"Why can't you just call the police about your dad?"

"He is the police." He sighs, falling back against my bed.

"What?" I ask, looking over at him confused.

"My dad's the chief." He rolls his eyes, looking back at me.

"Oh." I sigh, frowning. "That sucks."

"Don't need pity. I know its pretty horrible." He shakes his head, looking up at the ceiling.

"Maybe I'm not trying to pity you, maybe I'm just saying."

"Maybe. But you still did."

"It makes me feel bad, for having such a normal life." I say, hoping that didn't come off as rude.

"Don't apologize for something you can't control." He mumbles softly, making me smile.
