Do you hear me? I'm talkin' to you.

He's always alone. Nobody to talk to, have petty arguments with or joke around. This is not by choice, of course, it's because his usual accomplice was also alone. Keith had taken to spending time alone in his quarters or training on the training deck. It had been this way since Shiro went missing. It was hard on You.
The h/c paladin often times found themselves wandering the halls, searching for Keith, trying to prompt him to spend time with the rest of the crew. It always failed. At least, always up until now.
You found Keith eating in the dining area, alone as usual, eating a bowl of what seemed to be leftovers of a meal that Hunk had made the previous evening. "Hey, buddy," You attempted to initiate a conversation. No response. "Keith, this isn't cool man." More lack of response.

Across the water, across the deep blue ocean,

The unexpected happened. Keith looked up at you with the most solemn eyes, the raven haired man's eyes watery with salty tears. "I don't know what to do..." Keith mumbled out a choked sob, eyes connected to Your own e/c orbs before looking away, ashamed at his actions.
Why was Keith confiding in him? When You think about it, this is probably the first time you've both been in a room alone together since Shiro disappeared. Did Keith trust You with something as sacred as his emotions? And if so, why?

Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm tryin'

"Keith," Your tone was soft as you approached your black haired rival, and friend. "Buddy, it's alright, we'll find hi-"
"But what if we don't!" Keith snapped in reply. "I'm so sick and tired of everyone telling me it's going to be okay. Shiro is a brother to me! Don't you miss your family? Don't you worry that Zarkon is going to return to Earth to kill them? Because that's exactly what's going on right now!" Keith ranted, tears slipping from his eyes, leaving wet trails down his cheeks. Oh, what You would give to be able to wipe the tears from Keith's face.
"I'm just tired of being strong, ya know?" He said in a calmer tone towards you. The h/c nodded. "Of course I understand," You dared to take another step closer to the emotional teenager. "That's why I, we, are here for you..."

Boy I hear you in my dreams, I feel your whisper across the sea,

Keith's mind had drifted back to the first time that You had proven yourself trustworthy. Your relationship was different now. Shiro had returned to the team and the crew could focus more on their futures. Where they wanted to be and who they wanted to be with. Keith had often found himself waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, he dreamt that Your words were twisted from what you had actually said that day. He dreamt that You would give up searching for Shiro, and in turn, Keith followed him.
He knew this wasn't the reality of what happened, but the nightmares often returned to Keith. He struggled to hide his panting and sobbing from his room neighbors, which happened to be You and Pidge. The latter of the two hadn't bothered to check on him once, but Keith knew you and Pidge were very heavy sleepers. However, it was much different with You.

I keep you with me, in my heart

The h/c paladin often woke up to muffled sobs in their neighbor's room, and one night, had the courage to ask if he was alright. That had been the only night that Keith slept soundly.
You continued his nightly visits from then on.

You make it easier when life gets hard.
