8 - Falling Alone

Benny took Nina over to Abuela's apartment across the street and knocked on the door, as they waited he asked Nina, "Are you going to tell her now, or will you wait until tomorrow? I'm fine with whatever you want but I feel like I should be here to support you when you do tell her."

Nina replied; "I'll tell her sometime else. She'll probably be f-fussing too much for me to have time to t-tell her anyway. And I d-defiantly want you here f-for every time I have to tell someone, even Dani and Carla and..." Benny knew what was coming so took her hands "and my, my p-parents, when that point comes, I couldn't do any of this without you Benny." Sniffling she looked down at their hands.

Benny lifted their hands up and kissed hers gently. He then held hers to his heart until the door began to open when he dropped them so Abuela wouldn't find out about the two of them at that moment. Nina also knew that was his reasoning for letting go.

Abuela opened the door and looked overjoyed. She let Benny and Nina inside, and then saw Nina's devastating look, and started making a bed on the small couch in the living room. She stacked pillows and blankets in there, left and when he returned she was carrying more blankets, to go on top of the six already there. Nina said, "Abuela, I think that's enough. Any more and I'll boil. Can I just lay down?" Abuela replied, "Si. Sure. Should I just leave you two alone?"

"Si por favor, Gracias Abuela. You're the best!" Abuela walked out the door leaving Benny and Nina alone inside. "Do you think she's figured out about us?" Benny asked Nina calmly as to not worry her too much, she already had enough on her shoulders he didn't want to add anything else.

Nina said, "No, I think it's fine. She's known that we're friends for ages."

"Alright, well if you're going to sleep here tonight rather than at your parents I could possibly stay as well, if you want. Just to make sure you're okay."

"Sounds good," her eyes sparkled at the thought of Benny staying with her. "But before you do, if you do, can you just tell my parents where I am? I don't want them to have to search for me." She let out a bit of laughter, despite her dire state, "Somehow, that's something they'd do," she said, almost surprised that she knew they would.

"Will do, I won't tell them I'm staying though, or that could go horribly wrong" as Benny turned to go he quickly turned back and pulled her in close "I love you Nina" then he pulled her into another kiss.

She kissed him gently and then said, "I love you too, Benny."

Benny nervously left Abuela's and headed next door to the dispatch. Kevin was there looking very worried and concerned. As Benny entered he said "Hey boss, everything alright?" doing as best as he can to get on his good side for when he would have to tell him about him and Nina's relationship.

Kevin said, "I'm fine, Benny. Why are you here?" He was a bit confused as to why Benny came, since it wasn't a work day for him.

"I came to talk to you about Nina actually, I've been with her most of today catching up from the last year while she's been off at Stanford. Everyone else was working so I was the only one free to talk with her." He risked a glance at Kevin. "She's not been feeling very well so I took her over the Abuela's, where I think she is planning on staying the night to have some of her special soup and to catch up with her. I just thought I would let you know, so you didn't stress when she didn't come home this evening."

Kevin glared at him the entire time, as if he were analyzing him. By the end, he was nearly taken aback that Benny had thought to tell him, but didn't let it show. He said annoyed, "I can't believe she didn't come home, but okay, Thanks for letting me know, now go on, Benny."

"We dropped by your house, but Camila must have been out, as no one answered the door, so Nina decided the next best thing was to check into Abuela's" Benny was surprised at how easily the lie rolled off his tongue, he only hoped that Camila had actually been out at some point that afternoon!

Kevin was a bit skeptical, but nevertheless, he said, "Alright, just go on, I'm sure Abuela will take fine care of her. Now go!"

"Okay, See you tomorrow Sir." Benny said before he ran out the door, back into Abuela's and straight into Nina's arms.
