"What was that about?" Nina asked Usnavi in a hushed voice. "I'll tell you later," he said, a bit nervous to tell her about what he told Benny.
She said, "Okay then," and sat back down. "I have good news. I have more than enough to pay for Benny's stay!" she exclaimed. Usnavi cheered.
"Oh my gosh, Nina, that's great." He opened his arms and leant over to hug Nina the same way he hugged Usnavi earlier. "This is why you're the best. I love you so much, thank you for all this, I really appreciate it all."
She giggled nervously, "You don't have to thank me Benny, and I love you too."
Benny smiled. He was nervous, for many reasons. He knew at some point that day he'd need to talk to Nina about her depression. He was about to have surgery for the first time. He was also still unsure where Nina had actually got the money from, which almost stressed him out more. He took ahold of Nina's hand and laid himself back down on the bed.
Nina let him take her hand, but felt a tense hand under hers instead of the loose, warm one that she was used to. She asked him, "What's wrong, Benny?"
"Not much, Im just nervous and scared. Scared what could happen. Scared of any limitations I'm given, like how you couldn't write for 2 months with your wrist. Scared because you won't be allowed in there with me." He said looking down at their hands and then lifting his eyes to meet hers "Scared of everything."
Nina put her hand under Benny's, rubbing the top of it with the pad of her thumb. No matter how much she did it, he didn't get any less tense. She wished only that she could help him more. Nothing she could do was ever enough to satisfy her.
"Thank you, baby." Benny then just laid there, trying to focus on his breathing. Trying not to focus on everything else that was whirling around in his brain.
"You're welcome," she said softly. "You'll be alright, Benny. Ill come back in as soon as its over. Youll be fine."
Benny simply nodded in reply. The doctors then walked into the room.
Nina felt a pang in her heart. She knew that she'd have to leave the room. So that the doctor could save her breath, Nina kissed Benny on the forehead said I love you and left before either Benny or the doctor could say anything. She didn't want to hear the doctor say that she had to leave. Usnavi followed behind her, almost as solemn as she was.
Benny's eyes wanted to tear, but he had to keep himself strong. He didn't want to look like such a weakling to the doctors, just because his girlfriend had to leave. They explained the procedure they were going to use and then set straight to work.
Over what felt like hours, Usnavi and Nina sat in the waiting room, squeezing each other's hands and crying quietly.
After it was done, a doctor came in and asked, "Nina Rosario? Benny's asking for you." She walked back to the room, wondering why he didn't want Usnavi in there.
"Nina?" he called as the door began to open.
"Yes?"
"Gosh I've missed you. Come here." He slowly lifted himself and held his arms out towards her once he was sat upright.
She snapped, "Benny, sit your ass back down." Quickly, she realized what she had said. "Oh god, I'm so so, sorry." She rushed over to him and ran her hand through his hair, apologizing profusely. "I missed you too. I'm just worried about you. If this surgery doesn't work completely, then I won't have enough money to pay for a different treatment."
"No, Nina, you're right." He took her hand in his, gently kissed it and laid back down.
She smiled, but still argued, "But I shouldn't have cursed at you."
