Benny's phone went off suddenly and while he still stroked Nina's hair with one hand, he checked it to see a message from Vanessa.
"Nina, I just got a message from Vanessa, Usnavi told her about your collapse and she wants to come over for a bit. Are you okay with that?"
She said, "Okay, but I'm a bit tired. I have a feeling that I might pass out any moment."
"Okay, I'll text her and tell Usnavi to come too just in case, he's much better at this sort of stuff than I am. I'll tell her that you're not great though. And if your vision starts to fade again, tell me straight away, okay sweetie, I don't want you to pass out again. That's the last thing I want right now." He kissed her gently on the forehead and texted Vanessa back.
Softly, she said, "Okay," and then closed her eyes, feeling a bit sluggish.
A few minutes later Vanessa walked in quietly and walked over to them nervously.
Hearing the footsteps, she looked over to the door and saw Vanessa. She quietly said, "Hey 'Nessa."
"Hey Vanessa, thanks for coming over." Benny said kissing Nina on the top of her head and then standing up. "Nina's not feeling great, I think she could do with a bit of a girly chat, just to liven her spirits a bit." He said quieter into her ear. "Nina, I'm just going to grab another ice pack, I think Abuela forgot. Call me if anything happens, okay."
She smiled while nodding at Benny and sat down next to her. "Hey Hun, How are you feeling?"
Nina gently said, "Alright, besides collapsing earlier." and turned to Vanessa, "So, how are you?"
She gently smiled and said, "I'm alright. So, you're feeling better than earlier right?"
"Just a bit."
Benny walked in carrying a fresh ice pack for Nina. He walked over to the girls "I got you a fresh ice pack sweetie," he took the old one off her forehead and held the other one there for a moment. "Is everything alright Nina?"
"Yeah, we're all good. Love you, you're the best." She said resting her hand on Benny's.
The door clicked open, Benny turned his head to see Usnavi standing in the entrance way. "Hey Usnavi, head to the kitchen, I'll be through in a minute." He turned back to Nina "I love you too Nina, and you're a champ, taking all this so well. I'm going to talk to Usnavi, shout if you need me and I'll be here in a heartbeat." He picked up her hand, kissed it gently then walked out the room to talk to Usnavi in the kitchen.
After Benny left Vanessa looked Nina in the eye and said, "You two really love each other, I'm so glad you finally realized you were meant to be together. We've all predicted it for years."
Nina forced a chuckle "Yeah, Benny means the world to me. I'm so lucky to have him by my side through all this." Her eyes sparkled at the thought of Benny.
"Well, my afternoon shift is over, so you get to spend the rest of the evening with me." Vanessa responded, wanting to catch up on everything that had happened in the last year.
Softly, she said, "Alright."
She smiled. "So, we should talk more about what happened while you were away!"
Nina weakly smiled, "Um, not so much."
She cocked her head slightly. "Why not? I want to know everything!"
Nina's shadow of a smile turned to a small frown, and she said, "There's more that I didn't say about Stanford. Something that I've only told Benny."
"Oh, did someone hurt you!?" She sprung to conclusions
Nina said, "Oh, no! It's just that, with my three jobs and my schoolwork, I had no time to have a social life, let alone a happy one. So, there's not really much to say, unless you'd like to hear about how working a restaurant is."
"Oh," Vanessa replied, Nina closed her eyes and nodded sadly. "Well, did you get homesick? I know I would."
"Every - single - day," she said, pausing between each word.
"Oh, Well we all missed you, so much.'
Nina said, "I missed you all too."
Vanessa smiled and hugged her loosely.
Nina rested her head on Vanessa's shoulder and hugged her back.
