"Okay, you go. Come back here when you're done baby. I'll put this stuff back in the safe and lock it again." He took her hand and squeezed it and then let go, smiling up at her.
"Alright." She left the room, running out to a linen closet. Inside, she found a small square box with a side about the length of her hand. She pulled the ring apart so that it was in a half. It was made that way, just to show that the promise was there. She pulled out the yellowed paper inside. It said:
'Dear Nina,
I love you so much and it gives me so much joy to see you grow into such a beautiful young woman. I promise to never hurt you, to never try to sever good bonds between you and other people, and to never force ideas into your head. Your ideas deserve to be heard, ninita, so make them heard. You're the smartest little girl I know, and I know you'll make me proud someday.
Love, Daddy <3'
She looked at it in anger. He'd broken all of his promises. She rolled it back up, so it would fit in the ring and put it back in, feeding it through the hole. She put it in the white box and then wrote on the top, 'Kevin, I thought you'd like to have this back. Take it, because I don't want your broken promises anymore. Leave Benny, Usnavi, and I alone. I'm done. -A Lost Cause.' She sealed the box shut with a piece of tape and left it on the table, going back to the room.
Camilla texted to Benny, 'He's back. Just be quiet. He's back in for dinner and then he'll leave for some errands.'
'Thanks Cami, is Nina still out there. She left to do something and hasn't returned.'
Nina opened the door and quickly slipped inside, having heard Kevin come in.
Benny quickly messaged Camilla again 'don't worry, she's here again. We'll be as quiet as possible.' He then turned to Nina, "You okay baby. What did you do out there?" He reached his hand up, the necklace he had brought her years ago in the other hand. Everything else was back in the safes, including the $18000 cash she had.
She whispered, "What I had to do," and then went quiet, knowing that her dad was inside.
Benny stayed quiet, he was going to wait for Nina to finish but knew she was being quiet because of her father.
Camilla said, "Hey, Kev. Spaghetti's for dinner. Hot and ready on the stove."
"Thanks love." He gave her a kiss on the cheek. He took a bowl and filled it with the spaghetti. He then took it to the table and saw the box. "Cami, what's this?" He asked before looking at it properly.
"I don't know. I didn't put it there."
"Oh Okay." He put the bowl down and picked up the box. He recognized the handwriting instantly, "It's from Nina. She here then?"
"I don't know. She has a key, so she could've snuck in. I've been in our room, mostly."
"Oh okay." He looked down read the top of the box, unsure of what was inside. He carefully undid the tape. As soon as he saw the ring more memories came flooding back. He remembered giving her the promise ring when she started high school. He took the letter out and read it. Tears fell from his eyes as he looked back on the last few days, weeks and years. "I've fucked up Camilla. I'm the one who's broken our daughter." He said quietly looking up at her as she sat down on the opposite side of the table.
Camilla pursed her lips and said, "How so?"
"Read this." He put the letter and ring in the box and passed it over the table to her. "It's a promise ring I gave her the day she started High School." He took a fork-full of spaghetti and ate it as he watched his wife.
