"Mom!! I am home." I sang in a familiar tune as I shut the front door behind me. I could hear the sound of the pans and pots. No one understood the joy I felt in my belly when I heard that. It signified food was on its way. From what I perceived, we might eat momma's home made pie for lunch.
"Welcome honey, come here for a second would you?" She replied loudly and I went straight into the kitchen.
"Here I am, send me." I dragged my feet against our linoleum floors and sat on the polished granite counter.
"Why do you think that I always want to send you on an errand when I call you? I just want to know how your first day went." She smiled and checked the oven timer.
Before I could reply, this was what happened.
"Could you pass me the pie tray and the oven mittens. Yeah please refill this glass of milk for me." She dished out a long list of errands.
I yawned.
"Wow, would you look at that? My my, is that tiredness I feel, wow, I learnt that sleeping after a long day of school helps heal tiredness. They even said that running errands immediately after a long day causes acute tiredness. A serious medical case in.... Um what's that country?" I was already by the door.
"Okay, I was just joking dear. So tell me about your day. For real now." She smiled and sat on the long stool beside the counter.
I came back into the kitchen and sat in front of her.
"My lace got caught in the rose bush, I went late because of that, I met a pretty young lady that looked really old and was really grumpy then I bumped into a really dreamy and annoying boy and I saw Jess for the first time today in eight years. Then I went to a horrible literature class where the teacher kept screaming like a banshee and the annoying bumper dude was the cause of the scream, I had lunch in the cafeteria, I successfully became invisible and by God's grace I walked home safely and no car hit me. Even though I would have been better if I owned a car but then again I don't. So that is a summary of my day." I let out a long sigh and walked to the fridge to get my self a bottle of Gatorade.
"I wish I heard one thing you said but I didn't because you talk really fast, so we'll talk later. I have pie to serve." My beautiful mum smiled and politely excused herself and continued her kitchen job.
So even my hint about needing a new car fell on deaf ears. Or wait, are you sure that she pretended not to hear because I indirectly asked for a car for what seemed like a zillionth time?
Mothers.
I picked up my back pack from the counter and walked out of the kitchen and headed to my room. That was when I heard it.
"Wao wao wao vreee vroom gbash!"
That, ladies and gentlemen was the sound of the world's cutest and annoying soul approaching. I quickly ran to my room because I knew my brother will definitely come for me with his problems now.
Problems like:
*asking why the sky was blue in the day and black in the night or
*how to make all the trash in his room disappear
*asking me to be the villain in his drama and forcing me to die even when I'm lying down totally defeated.
*telling me unbelievable stories about how he fought off all the villains of the justice league and they didn't take him to join the league because he was too young and he told them he loved his family.Oh come on! Tell me something real brother.
I still wondered how an eight year old still played as much as and reasoned like a four year old.
Life was weird.
My brother's name is Mason. He owns a glorified Lego collection, has watched every superhero movie there is and we have not heard the last of it. He has actually jumped from our tree with a cape tied around his neck believing he could fly.
