margotkatefranklin: long car rides = amazing karaoke, debates over things that don't matter, and being really bored 90% of the time...yay only twelve hours to go

"Home sweet home," I said as I walked into my all-too-familiar Albuquerque house. Shawn closed the door behind us and let out a sigh.

"Sometimes it feels like we never even left," he replied with a smile, setting our bags down. I looked back at him.

"You know you love it here," I teased, and he smiled.

"I do."

I rolled my eyes. "You don't, though. I don't even love it."

He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. "As long as you're here, I love it."

And just as I had pulled him closer to me and kissed him, what could only be described as utter bliss, we were interrupted by the voice of my dear mother.

"Margot Kate Franklin, you've been here two whole minutes and you'd sooner make out with your boyfriend, who spent the whole twelve hour drive with you, than say hello to your mother who hasn't seen you in five months?"

I gave Shawn a look, and he just shrugged. "She's got a point."

"You're just as bad, Mendes," my mother said, and she hugged him first, making me laugh.

"Sorry. Won't happen again," he replied, a bit of laughter in his voice.

"It better not," she warned, a happy smile on her face. Then she turned to me and put her hand on her heart, looking at me sadly. "Why are you so old now?"

"Sorry?" I said, and she gave me a classic Mom hug. I miss getting Mom hugs all the time. I used to think they were the worst when I was younger. You don't realize what you have until it's gone, I can definitely say that.

"How was the drive?" she asked, and Shawn and I gave each other knowing looks.

"It sucked," we said at the same exact time, and then we both laughed. My mom looked at us funny.

"Why did it suck?" she asked, and we both followed her into the kitchen.

"Well, it was actually just fine until we got about an hour out, and then we hit all of the rush hour traffic, which made a one hour drive more like three hours. And then it started raining, so that was just the icing on the cake," Shawn explained.

"But on the bright side, I wrote a whole paper for my stupid creative writing class," I said. "My first day of class was two days ago and my professor already expects a five page paper by Wednesday. Who does that?"
