a little over a year later...
APRIL"You know what we should do?"
I looked up from my phone at Shawn, who was sitting across from me at the kitchen table, eating the mediocre dinner I attempted to make. I'm not much of a chef (at all), but sometimes I try. Then I realize, once again, that I suck at cooking, although he reassures me "it's actually pretty okay," but every time it makes me just want to give up. Then again, he's not much of a chef either, so our kitchen collaborations are pretty interesting at this point. We're learning together, you could say.
He looked up at me. "What?"
I set my phone down. "Just run away and get married. Like, in Alaska. Or Hawaii. Just you and me."
He laughed. "I'm not opposed to the idea. Although, the wedding is in three days, so I'm not sure this will be a good time to tell everybody that we've decided to elope in Alaska. Or Hawaii."
I sighed. "Who cares? I'm ready for it to be over."
He gave me a look. "Ouch."
I chuckled and shook my head. "Not like that. It's just all kind of stressful. I just want to be married and be done, ya know? Even though I am excited. Really excited."
He nodded. "I know it's a lot, but you've been great. You're truly the best," he said with a smile, and I smiled as well.
"I try," I said, shrugging.
I looked back at another message from my mother, who's flight was delayed for like the fifth time. Another stressful part of having a wedding is going to be having our family in town. Although I'm very excited to see them, I know it's going to be a bit hectic. Probably a lot hectic. God, grant me serenity.
"You know what I'm really excited about?" he said, drawing my attention back up to him.
"Hm?"
"Seeing the most beautiful girl in the whole world walk down the aisle to marry me," he replied, a smile playing on his lips. "That's going to be pretty great."
I blushed and looked down at my hands. "Yeah. It will be."
He put his hand on mine and leaned across the table, looking to meet my eyes. "Let me know what you decide. Hawaii or Alaska," he told me with a smile, kissing my forehead before getting up and putting his plate in the sink. I returned a weak smile. I desperately need to get my mind off of everything.
"I think that you need to stop thinking about the wedding. Me too, actually," he said, leaning against the counter and reading my mind.
"I couldn't agree more. What do you suggest?" I asked with a playful smile, meeting him at the countertop and catching his eyes.
