AN: my dad attempt at angst

----

"Levi..."

"Mama..." I took her hand in mine, her hand frail and limp. She had only been getting worse. The doctors... Said she wasn't likely to live.

"Levi... Promise me... "

"Yes Mama, what is it?" I asked, my eyes darting to her pale face. So pale... so gouged.  She was such a beautiful woman. Now she was left to her bare bones...

"Promise...You won't let anyone ...make you regret... what you choose in life."

"Yes Mama." I nodded as her grip seemed to grow weaker. "I love you Mama."

"I love you... My little Riavelle..."

The machine beside her bed started to screech loudly, the line that held her heart waves darting up and down before finally....

"M-mama..."

~~~
Are your proud of me Ma?
"Come on Levi!" I heard the ocean eyed boy call, his beautiful laugh ringing from over the chain link fence. Thank god it wasn't rusty. I shook my head, my smile cracking as I kicked a combat boot into the hole and pushed myself up.
"Brat wait- AH!" I yelped as I felt his hand grab my arm and he pulled me over the fencez my jacket snagging and us collapsing to the ground in a fit of laughs. The taller boy lifted us up and started running again.
Are you proud? That I listened to you?
He ran and I followed after. He always seemed to be running. Running from something. Maybe we both were. And... I'd always follow him.
You knew him. The boy with the ocean eyes. The boy with the smile of gold.
"Where are we even going brat!?" I half laughed half yelled. My sides were aching and we had been running for forever. He just laughed, falling back to grab my hand, clasping it tightly. I winced slightly.
"Sorry." He said, eyes suddenly going wide. He pulled my hand forward and slowly dragged my sleeve down. I tried pulling away but it was him... "Let's carry on ok?" His eyes were still on my scar but was soon pulling me along once more like nothing had happened.
I don't regret it now. Loosing you. It was your time. I- I still miss you.
"So- where again?" I tried breaking the thick tension he had put up between us, smiling softly as he dragged me through the ally. Trash skittered across the black pavement as the wind blew. The brat just gave me a sly smile and shook his head.
"Secret."
"Secret my ass."
"Your ass is so not a secret." He retorted, bumping his shoulder with mine before I tried to throw my hands at his face. His stupid. Pretty. Little face.
I took your death hard... And I definitely hurt for a long time. I still do. But your memory will carry on. In me. In him.
"So is Annie getting better?" He asked, hair falling into his face, his teeth moving to bite his lip ring as I nodded.
"She's going much better. Eight weeks. No cutting."
"That's great! I talked to Armin and he's finally eating again. I think him meeting and talking to Jean really helped..."
I nodded, smiling.
I did as you once asked, and tried to help others. Like you did! You had always been the person I looked up to most. Helping all those people who came to our house. I remember watching you in your little office room. All those people you helped...
"I love you Levi." Eren interrupted my thoughts, suddenly looking down at me with a serious face.
I froze.
But I'm still scared. Of losing the people I love. I haven't changed enough. To open my heart up to that kind of hurt. Not again.
"I know..." I whispered back.
He nodded, his hand still intertwined with mine. It was comforting. And suffocating all at once. I craved him. He helped make me better. That was one of the true ways to get better. Finding someone who makes you a better person... By being there. They don't do a thing. You get better, because you want to get better. For them.
"We're here."
I remember when you asked me to help others in need, not as an order, but truely asked. I was ten. I remember the marching band and your soft smile. The smile that molded me into the person I am now...
That was also the day you had been diagnosed with cancer.
"E-eren..." I managed to crack it out but it caught in my throat. The rest of the words I wanted to say.
'Eren how could you do this? How did you do this? How can I ever repay you?'
"You like?" He asked, turning to face me as his eyes shut in an adorable smile. 'Eren' I squeezed his hand.
"I love it." He smiled and pulled me into a hug. His chin rested on my head, his hands on the dip of my back. I wrapped my arms around his chest and buried my face into his grey hoodie. It smelt like burnt wood an a mix of cinnamon. The smells I had associated with safety. Of a home. Of LOVE-
"I know how much they mean to you." I nodded against his chest and turned to see the band march by. Smiling, I turned to greet his ocean eyes with my stormy ones.
"Eren."
"Ye-"
We kissed.
And it was awkward.
But good.
I never regret losing you now. Because I carried on your memory and met the one who helped me carry it forward.
