Breathe.

Hailey's age: 13 years old

Hailey sat in class, head in her hands. She was failing 3 of her classes because she was absent.

She hated her teachers. They always judged her because of who her parents were.

She just wanted to scream until she couldn't no more. She wasn't absent on purpose. Zoella her aunt was in the hospital along with her family. She got in a car wreck and Zoella's little boy was in the ICU.

She didn't wanna be here. She felt her heart rate quicken as she lost her breath.
Her teacher who hates her the most glared at her.
"You failed next week's test."
"But Mrs. Jackson, we haven't even taken it yet."
"I know this is what you get for your parents being queers."

That's when Hailey panicked. She got up, feeling lightheaded and ran out of class. Her best friend Kaylea, sat there in shock. She hated the teacher too.

Hailey ran down the hallway before collapsing into tears, sobbing and screaming. She couldn't breathe, and her vision was blurry. She couldn't hear the footsteps behind her.

All of a sudden she was engulfed into a hug.

"Hailey, it's me. Breathe."
There was Kaylea with Hailey's hands in her own. She held them near her heart.
"Feel that. That's my breathing. Try to match it. Ok?"
Hailey began to breathe slowly, but each breath was more of a gasp.

Suddenly it was all black.

Hailey woke up in the nurses office, Kaylea beside her. Dan and Phil were in the office. All of a sudden the nurse looked at her.
"Deary, you're up. Here." She handed her a cotton ball with lavender scent.
"I'll be back."

Hailey looked at Kaylea until Phil came in.
"Hailey love."

Hailey's throat hurt from screaming. Phil wrapped her up in his arms while she let tears leave her eyes.

They stayed like this until Hailey's breath steadied.

Dan came in after talking to the principal to fix her grades.

He came in to find Phil and his sleeping daughter all ready to go.

Hailey slept soundly. She just needed someone to remind her to breathe.
