The first thing I saw when I reopened my eyes was Ashton looming over me, his expression one of concern. “Lukey,” he said quietly. “Are you okay?”
I sat up and looked around, ignoring the sharp pain in my back. “What happened?” I asked, and as I glanced around at the sandy beach we were on everything came back to me. The hurricane warning flashing on the GPS, the pouring rain and crashing thunder, our yacht being smashed to pieces on the rocks of this very island, and being knocked unconscious by those same rocks. “We got shipwrecked,” Ashton laughed after a few moments, his words confirming what I already knew. “You didn’t answer my question, Lukey. Are you okay?”
I had to process what he had asked me for a few seconds before answering. Was I okay? I didn’t hurt anywhere other than my back, so besides that and being completely confused, I was fine. “Yeah. I’m okay. Are you? Please, please tell me you are.” I could care less about my own self; all I was worried about was Ashton. Looking at him, he appeared to be perfectly fine other than a few scratches on that gorgeous face of his, and when he nodded I breathed a sigh of relief. He threw his arms around me and I leaned my head against his warm shoulder for a few moments before pulling away.
He helped me to stand and I took another look around the beach, surprised when I saw Nash near the rocks, obviously trying to salvage what was left of the ship. When his eyes met mine I felt an unexplainable surge of anger flood through me, and before I knew what I was doing I was storming over to him. “You did this,” I said once I had reached him, trying to keep my voice steady. “Didn’t you?”
“I have no clue what you’re talking about,” Nash said indifferently, and if Ashton hadn’t of been standing beside me I probably would’ve punched him right then and there. I could tell he was lying. That’s one of the good things about being a vampire, I have the ability to tell whether or not a person is telling the truth. “Of course you do. You knew as soon as we left the dock this morning that there was a hurricane on the way, and instead of turning back around you led us right towards the storm.”
Nash rolled his eyes, and once again I had the urge to rip his head off. I was starving, after all. “You’re crazy, Hemmings. I can’t control the weather.”
“I never said you could,” I took a few more steps towards him, and he immediately backed away. “but I do know that you intentionally took us out on the water today because you knew there was a hurricane coming, and I’m pretty sure you also knew that we would undoubtedly get stranded on this very island.”
“You two are the fools who got on the boat with me,” Nash said innocently. “so who’s really at fault here?”
Thankfully for him, Ashton interrupted me before I had the chance to think of a good comeback. “Don’t you think we need to find a way out of here instead of standing here arguing?”
“Yeah. I own a few more boats on the other side of the island that we can use to get back to where you guys are staying.” Nash pushed past me and walked towards the dense line of trees beside us.
“You own a few more boats? Are you rich or something?” I asked as I took Ashton’s hand and followed behind him.
Nash smirked. “Of course I’m rich. I’m Nash Grier, after all. Haven’t you heard of me?”
I shook my head, his attitude becoming one of the many things I hated about him. “Of course not. We just met you yesterday.”
