Six hours later we arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a place that I was by now well acquainted with. I was also well acquainted with the cool air that hit me as soon as I had stepped off the plane, and so I quickly grabbed my jacket out of my suitcase and draped it around my shoulders. “Where are we staying?” I asked Shawn, who was matching his steps with mine as we made our way through the airport, keeping our heads down so that we wouldn’t immediately alert any paparazzi or screaming girls that may be lurking around to our presence.

“Embassy Suites,” Shawn replied simply, causing me to smile. That was the place the boys and I had stayed last time, and I can honestly say it was one of the nicest hotels I had ever stayed in. “I’m guessing you’ve stayed there before?”

I nodded and pulled my coat tighter around me as we reached the very crowded parking lot, where we were led by a group of what I could only assume were Shawn’s management team to a black van similar to the one that we had taken back in Florida.

We rode in silence until we reached the hotel, where we were dropped off and thankfully left alone—for a little while, at least.

“My concert isn’t until tomorrow afternoon,” Shawn was saying as we stepped off the gold-plated elevator and into our very large and very spacious room. “Which means we have the rest of today and most of tomorrow to do whatever we want.”

I turned to him expectantly, watching as he unpacked his suitcase and set his guitar down by the TV. “And? What do you have in mind?”

“I’m not sure,” Shawn finished putting his clothes in a drawer and sat down on the end of the bed. He was silent for a few seconds, and as I watched him thoughtfully run his hand through his hair I had the sudden urge to do the same. “Wait a second—do you remember that lighthouse place I met you and Ashton at that time? You really seemed to enjoy it there.”

I looked away, trying to hide the tears that threatened to sting the corners of my eyes. Lime Kiln was mine and Ashton’s special place—I couldn’t go there with Shawn. It was wrong, and even though Ash had no clue where I was or what I was doing I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was betraying him.

Even so, I also couldn’t miss the chance to see the orcas again. I had been keeping up with the recent whale reports and I knew they were still around, and I also knew that if Shawn and I went they would undoubtedly be there waiting for us.

After a few moments I finally nodded, ignoring the nagging voice in the back of my mind that was telling me how wrong this was. I knew going to Lime Kiln with Shawn wouldn’t be half as perfect or special as it was with Ashton, but I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to take advantage of a rare sunny day here in Washington. “Alright. Let’s go.” I looked down at my watch, trying to remember what times the different ferries left. “I think if we leave now we should be able to make the five-thirty ferry.”

It was later than when Ashton and I normally went to Lime Kiln, but the best thing was that it wouldn’t get fully dark outside until about ten or ten-thirty. I was so accustomed to everything about Seattle that it was almost like I lived here, and Shawn must have noticed this because he took my hand once we had reached the parking lot. “You really like this place, don’t you?”

“Yes,” I said as I climbed into the Range Rover—apparently there wasn’t a lot of variety to choose from around here when it came to rental cars—that had somehow been driven here from the airport. “I do. Very, very much so.”
