When I returned back to my room two and a half hours later, I was surprised to find the door was already halfway open. I was a little apprehensive, what with my experience with vampires and witches and all things evil, and I couldn’t help but wonder who or what could be waiting inside. “Hello?” I called out once I had decided I was brave enough to ease open the door. “Who’s in here?”
A voice replied back almost immediately, and it startled me so much I had to hold onto the edge of the kitchen counter for support. “Shawn. Shawn Mendes. Sorry if I scared you.”
Once I had regained my composure I took my sunglasses and jacket and laid them down on the table before entering the living room where, sure enough, Shawn was sitting on the couch. “For one, how did you get in my room without a key, and secondly, what are you doing here in the first place?”
“I’m a vampire, I have ways of getting into people’s rooms,” he laughed. “and in case you’ve forgotten I had texted you earlier asking if I could come over.”
I sighed and rubbed my eyes, suddenly feeling very tired. “I sent you a reply saying now wasn’t a good time and that maybe we could talk later, did you not get it?”
Shawn shrugged. “It is later. I texted you three hours ago. Plus, I figured with all this Ashton drama going on, you might need some company.”
“I don’t need company,” I said as I sat down beside him. “It’s like I told Calum earlier, all I need is to be alone.”
Shawn either completely ignored my comment or just decided not to listen, because he suddenly stood up and, instead of leaving, walked to the small refrigerator in the corner. “Do you have any wine or anything in here?”
I rolled my eyes. “This is a five-star hotel, Mendes. Of course it has wine. You’re not old enough to drink though, are you?” I didn’t know how old he was now, but I knew he couldn’t have been more than fifteen or sixteen when Nathan turned him.
“I’m almost a hundred years old,” he smiled mischievously and grabbed a tall bottle and two glasses from a table near the television. “so yes, I am definitely old enough to drink. Do you want any?”
I was about to shake my head and say no, but then I thought about all I had been through with this fake relationship drama and decided I deserved at least one glass of wine. “Yeah, sure. Why not.”
Shawn quickly handed a glass to me and put the bottle back in the refrigerator before sitting back down once more. “Do you boys have a concert tonight, Luke?”
“No,” I replied, lifting the glass and taking a sip of the bittersweet liquid. “It will probably be a while before we have any more shows, at least here. The arena we were scheduled to be performing at burned down.” I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, curious to see how he would react to the news.
“I know you’re thinking my friends had something to do with this,” he said after a few moments. “but they didn’t. I’ve been with them all day every day for the past week, and I can assure you that neither they nor Nathan had an opportunity to go anywhere and burn any arenas down.”
I was doubtful at first as to whether or not he was telling the truth, but when I saw the sincere look in his eyes those doubts soon disappeared. “What about Ariana?” I asked carefully. “Have you seen or heard anything from her?”
“Not since the fight at the warehouse,” Shawn said quickly. “but I do know one thing—she’s definitely not dead. Nathan’s been talking to her on the phone, and I can only imagine what evil and malicious things they’re planning once she gets back from whatever island she flew away to.”
I nodded, not really sure of what to say next. We remained sitting like that, quietly staring at the blank television, until Shawn spoke up once more. “Are you and Ashton still together?”
I looked at him in disbelief, shocked that he had the audacity to just randomly ask me something like that. “Yes, Ashton and I are still together.” I wanted to add for now, but I didn’t.
Shawn must’ve noticed my hesitation, because he smiled at me sympathetically. “I know this whole thing with Gemma is really bothering you, isn’t it?”
I sighed. “Yes, it is.” I was getting tired of all these questions he was asking me, simply because I didn’t feel like talking about this particular topic.
“I don’t understand,” It sounded like he was talking more to himself than he was to me, and so I turned to face him once more. “What don’t you understand, Shawn?”
“I just don’t understand how Ashton could be so stupid. I mean, he has the perfect life and the perfect relationship with you, how could he just throw it all away for someone as boring as Gemma Styles?”
I fought the urge to laugh. “Gemma’s not that boring. Her brother’s in a world-famous boyband, in case you weren’t aware.”
“I’m aware,” Shawn replied. “but I still don’t understand. I know he didn’t really have a lot to do with the fake girlfriend thing, but he definitely knew what he was doing when he hurt you. You know, if I were him, I would’ve put up more of a fight. He’s a vampire, after all. All he had to do was just compel your management to forget about whatever scheme they were planning, and you two could’ve continued your relationship just like before.” He smiled at me again, and it was then that I realized what a beautiful smile it was. How had I never seen how attractive Shawn was until now? “Anyway, Luke, I guess what I’m trying to say is that if Ashton wants to move on, it’s his loss. You deserve to be happy, and you deserve to have someone who cares for you and wouldn’t leave you for anyone or anything.”
He was silent for a few more moments before repositioning himself even closer to me and setting his untouched glass of wine down on the table in front of us. “You deserve more than Ashton Irwin,” he whispered, putting his arm around me. “because he obviously can’t see just how special you really are.” Before I knew what was happening he leaned forward and kissed me, and it happened so quickly I barely had a chance to react.
His lips were cold and unfamiliar against mine, but I still didn’t pull away. I wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol or the fact that I hadn’t been kissed like that in what felt like months; all I knew was that it just felt so good to feel wanted again. He tangled his fingers in my hair and I wrapped my arms around his waist, ignoring the little voice in my head that was screaming out that this was wrong. I shouldn’t be doing this. I shouldn’t be kissing anyone, much less Shawn Mendes, but I was enjoying this too much to stop now.
It was at that moment, of course, that the door opened. I was so caught up with Shawn and so completely out of it that I didn’t even hear the footsteps until I noticed a shadow move out of the corner of my eye, and when I looked up I was both shocked and horrified to see Ashton standing over me with an angry expression on his face.
