Shawn’s concert and interview got over around seven-thirty, but instead of going to the hotel like I thought we would I soon found myself sitting in a leather chair at an upscale restaurant in downtown Seattle. It was a really nice place—a little rich and exquisite for my taste, but it was on the water so I could look for whales—and even though neither of us had said it, I thought of this dinner as mine and Shawn’s first unofficial ‘date’.

“So,” I said, reaching across the table so I could put my hand over his. “Did you have fun at your concert?”

Shawn nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, I did. The crowd was amazing.” He was silent for a moment, obviously choosing his words before he said them, and I had a feeling that I already knew what he was going to ask before he even spoke. “What did Ashton want to talk to you about? I saw you walk out with him.”

“Ashton wanted to know if our relationship was officially over, or if our separation was temporary.” I sighed, remembering the look on his face when I had walked away from him.

Shawn looked at me, hesitantly meeting my eyes. “And? What did you tell him?”

“I told him that yes, we were over,” It felt strange saying those words aloud, but it also lifted a weight off my chest that I had been carrying ever since I had first realized I was in love with Shawn. Now I could be with him without having to constantly worry about betraying Ashton, and that was something I was surprisingly happy about.

“You broke up with him?” Shawn was trying to keep his expression neutral, but he couldn’t hide the smile that crept onto his face when I nodded. “Well, let’s mark tonight as the end of one relationship and the beginning of another—ours.”

I returned the smile and squeezed his hand, feeling completely content for the first time in a month. “That sounds like a plan.”

After picking at our steaks for a while we realized neither of us were all that hungry, and so we sat and stared out at the glistening water for a while before standing up, paying the very expensive bill, and walking back out to the parking lot.

“Are we going back to the hotel now?” I asked once we had reached the truck Shawn had borrowed from one of his management guys.

“Not this early we’re not,” Shawn replied simply, turning up the radio before pulling back out onto the main road.

I was inquisitive as to where we were going next, but I was secretly glad that we weren’t going back to our room just yet. I wasn’t sleepy, and I was enjoying this quality time spent with Shawn a lot more than I probably should. “So, since we’re officially dating now, don’t you think we should get to know each other better?”

“You already know everything about me,” Shawn laughed. “I’m sixteen—well, I was before Nathan turned me, I’m from Canada, and I’m a singer. What else do you need to know?”

I rolled my eyes. “Those are just the important things. I want to know everything else about you—what you like to do in your free time, what your family’s like, your favorite color…things like that.”

Shawn ran a hand through his hair thoughtfully. “Well, in my free time I like to play my guitar and ride my skateboard, and sometimes hang out with Nash and Cameron—that is, if they’re having one of their good days. My family’s pretty normal, I’ve got one sister named Aaliyah who I’m really close to, and as for my favorite color?” he paused to look over at me and wink. “My favorite color is your eyes.”
