The more minutes that ticked past without an update on Luke’s condition, the more anxious I became. I had been sitting in this same uncomfortable chair for the past hour, trying to focus on the flashing television screen, but it was no use. I don’t know why I even turned it on in the first place. After a few more minutes of listening to the same people say the same things over and over I grabbed the remote and turned it off altogether, enjoying the sudden silence. “Hey!” Calum exclaimed, an aggravated expression on his face. “I was watching that.”

“If you want to watch television, you can go back to the hotel with Michael.” I know I sounded rude, but I didn’t care. My head was pounding, my ears were still ringing, and it felt like there was an emptiness in my chest that just wouldn’t go away. I wasn’t in the mood to hear Calum’s constant complaining, especially over something so trivial.

“You’re worried about Luke, aren’t you?” Calum asked, and I looked at him in disbelief. Sometimes he could ask some stupid questions. “Of course I’m worried about him. He’s my everything, and to think he might not make it out of this hospital alive is tearing me apart.” I was afraid I would completely break down if I said anything else, so instead I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes.

If something did happen to Luke, I’d fall apart even more than I already was. I can’t—and I won’t—live without him. He is the best thing that’s ever happened to me; it’s like he told me one time before, I didn’t think it was possible for a person to love someone as much as I love him. He did save my life, after all.

“I feel like I need to call Derek,” Colin said suddenly, breaking through my thoughts. “Maybe he can figure out why Luke, Cody, and Austin aren’t healing properly.”

Russell started laughing. “Kaepernick, he couldn’t even figure out why you weren’t healing, what makes you think it will be different this time? Plus, Luke and the others aren’t even werewolves. They’re vampires, which means if you’re going to call anyone, you should call Damon.”

“Damon and Derek, weren’t they the two guys you said would help us fight Nathan earlier and they didn’t show up?” Calum wondered.

“Yeah, well, I’m sure they were just busy,” Colin defended. “Damon usually has a lot going on in Mystic Falls, and Derek has even more to deal with in Beacon Hills.”

“Do you think we really killed Ariana?” Christian asked, changing the subject.

“I sure hope so,” Shay said. “but to be honest, Dan and I didn’t really mean to kill her. We were just trying to counteract the spell she was putting on Luke with something different, and apparently we used more power than we were aware of.”

Danielle rolled her eyes. “Something tells me that witch won’t stay dead for long. She’s too mean to die.”

“True,” Kevin agreed. “I just wish I had of killed Nathan. I had the perfect opportunity, but I got distracted by Nash and Luke and let him slip away.”

Russell turned to him questioningly. “That reminds me, how in the world are you so powerful? You were the only one of us fast enough to even get close to Nathan, and you were able to almost take him down for good.”

Kevin shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess my age and experience has a lot to do with it. I actually used to be on the vampire council, but then I decided all that official stuff wasn’t for me.”
