That flight was undoubtedly the longest I had ever been on, and when we finally reached the airport I was so relieved that I didn’t even bother to look at my watch to see what time it was. The plane had barely parked itself on the runway good before I was out of my seat and running towards one of the doors which thankfully opened almost as soon as I had reached it, Colin struggling to keep up behind me. “Wait up, Hemmings!” he called out once we were safely inside the airport, but I didn’t slow down. I couldn’t, not when I was this close to Ashton.

I impatiently pushed through the crowds of people that seemed to get thicker and thicker as I neared the parking area, ignoring the protests and annoyed mutters that followed me. After what seemed like forever I reached the doors leading to the outside, and I opened them with such force that I’m surprised they didn’t fall off of the hinges. When I reached the dark parking garage, however, I realized that I didn’t have any means of transportation and I was too exhausted to run the whole way like I had in California. Furthermore I had no sense of direction whatsoever, so even if I was strong enough I wouldn’t know how or where to begin looking for the hotel.

I was still standing there, helplessly looking around at the multitude of cars surrounding me, when Colin appeared from around the corner. “Couldn’t get very far, could you?” When I shook my head he started laughing and pulled out a set of keys, motioning towards a shiny red Jaguar convertible that was parked in front of us. “I normally don’t allow other people near my car, but for you I’ll make an exception. Come on, if we want to beat the rush hour traffic we better leave now.”

“How in the world can you afford a car like this?” I asked absently as I climbed in the passenger’s seat, careful not to scratch the red leather interior.

“Have you forgotten that I’m a professional football player?” Colin smiled, starting the car and turning down the loud rap music that immediately started blaring from the Bose speakers. “I’m not quite as famous or experienced as some of those other quarterbacks that I refuse to name, but I’m still ‘elite’ enough to make a pretty good amount of money, especially since my contract just got extended.”

I nodded and tried to calm my nerves by focusing on the multitude of traffic that had seemed to materialize out of thin air once we reached the interstate. “I know a way back to the hotel without having to stay in all of this mess,” Colin was saying, putting his sunglasses back on. “but it would be an hour and a half longer, and I don’t think you can wait that long to see Ashton.”

“Whatever you want to do,” I replied, even though what he had said was completely true. Every second that ticked past without Ash next to me felt like another piece of me that was breaking, and so the sooner I was beside him the better off the both of us would be.

Colin shrugged and turned up the radio once more, and even though the music was giving me a headache I didn’t have the heart to tell him to turn it down. He was enjoying it, and after all he had done for me I figured I shouldn’t bother him any more than I had to with something so minor and trivial.

By the time we reached exit one ninety-two my hands were shaking almost uncontrollably. I didn’t really know why I was so nervous; maybe it was the fact that I was getting closer and closer to Ashton after being away for so long, or maybe it was the realization of all I had been through these past four days rushing back to me. I wasn’t certain, but I did know for a fact that when we finally reached the tall brick building that was our hotel my heart was all but beating out of my chest.
