*Luke’s POV*
I was sitting on the end of the bed, absently flipping through the channels on the television, when I got the phone call. I knew before either of us even said anything that something terrible had happened; Ashton’s shaky breathing on the other end of the line told me all I needed to know. “Ash,” I said cautiously, my heart racing. “What’s wrong? What’s happened?”
“You need to come to Gemma’s apartment,” Ashton had whispered tearfully, and the fear and shock he was feeling was almost tangible through the telephone. “I…I think she’s dead.”
I was already up and putting on my shoes when he had said that, and the room started to spin around me until I had to lean onto the wall for support. I had a million questions running through my head, like who in the world would want to hurt Gemma Styles, but the main thing concerning me was Ashton’s safety. Whoever had apparently murdered Gemma might still be around, and even with police officers and the EMTs I had heard talking in the background Ashton might still be in danger.
I realized as I stood up and walked into the hallway that I didn’t have any means of transportation. Ashton had taken the Range Rover and neither Michael nor Calum had a vehicle here at the hotel, so instead of asking Austin, Cody, or even Colin to drive me I decided it would be less of a hassle to just walk. It wouldn’t be as fast because I wasn’t quite as strong as I had been in California due to the fact that I hadn’t fed in a week, but I was desperate.
With that said I started running as soon as I reached the parking lot, not even bothering to try and disguise myself from the ordinary and unaware humans that were crowding the busy streets. I was just a blur to them; a sort of shadow that was gone before they even had a chance to question themselves on what exactly they were seeing.
Thankfully I arrived at Gemma’s apartment within ten minutes, and I also thankfully spotted Ashton almost as soon as I had arrived, standing by a line of yellow crime scene tape and a group of police officers that were undoubtedly interrogating him. When he turned around and saw me more tears escaped from his eyes, and I quickly wrapped my arms around him and pulled him close to me, ignoring the annoyed looks from the police officers. “What happened?” I whispered, keeping my voice low.
Ashton didn’t reply for a few moments, and when he finally looked up at me his eyes were red and shining with unshed tears. “There was so much blood, Lukey. So, so much blood…” his voice trailed off into silence, and I made up my mind at that moment that I wouldn’t ask him any more questions until he was ready to talk. He was obviously scared and upset, and I could honestly say I felt the same way.
I started to take his hand and walk away from the officers, but one of the taller ones put out a hand to stop me. “Wait a second, sir. We need to ask you a few questions as well. What is your name?”
“Luke Hemmings,” I replied quickly, hoping that the faster I answered their questions the sooner I could leave and take Ashton back to the hotel. “and before you even ask yes, I was a friend of Gemma’s.”
That wasn’t exactly the truth, but it wasn’t quite a lie either. I didn’t like Gemma because of obvious reasons, but as I stood here in the front yard of her blood soaked apartment I realized that she was innocent and didn’t deserve to die. She was young, beautiful, and had a full life ahead of her.
A voice broke through my thoughts, and I realized that the officers had asked me another question. “Did Ms. Styles have any enemies that you know of, Mr. Hemmings?”
