I was awoken the next morning by the incessant buzzing of my phone, which was strange because I thought it was still turned off.
With eyes half-closed I leaned over and grabbed it from the bedside table and sleepily tapped on the icon in the corner of the screen that said ‘four new messages’. The first two texts were from Shawn asking me to call him, while the other two were from Ashton.
Normally I would’ve immediately called Ashton and apologized for everything that had happened these past few days, but I didn’t this time. To be honest, I had nothing to be sorry for—he did. I knew for a fact that was what the texts he sent me were about, and that’s why I deleted them and instead focused on dialing Shawn’s number that had by now become as familiar as my own.
He answered on the third ring, and I had a feeling that he had probably been sitting by the phone waiting on this very call. “Good morning, Luke,” he spoke before I had a chance to, which I was once again thankful for because I, as usual, didn’t know what to say. “Did I wake you up? If I did, I’m sorry.”
“You did, but it’s okay,” I admitted. If it had of been anyone else on the other end of the line I probably would’ve yelled at them, but Shawn was different. “Anyway, what did you want to talk to me about? Your message said you needed to ask me something.”
Shawn was quiet for a few moments before replying. “Your next concert isn’t for another week or so, right?”
I nodded, but then I remembered I was on the phone and he couldn’t see me. “Uh, yeah. Right. Why are you asking?”
“Well, I have to go to Seattle, Washington for two days to do a concert and an interview with this really big radio station, and I was wondering if you’d like to go with me.” Shawn’s voice was hesitant and unsure, almost as if he was expecting me to immediately say no.
I had so many thoughts running through my mind—what about Calum and Michael? What about management? More importantly, what about Ashton? “I’d like to,” I finally said. “but I can’t. Management won’t allow it.”
“Do you always have to do what they tell you?” Shawn asked in exasperation. “Furthermore, Ashton’s been traveling all over Florida with Gemma Styles and management hasn’t yelled at them for that—of course, that’s their doings anyway—so with that said you have the right to get out of that boring hotel room you’re in once in a while.”
I sighed, feeling all the walls I was desperately trying to keep up come crashing down around me. “Alright. I’ll go with you.”
If smiles could be heard, I definitely would’ve heard Shawn’s. “Great. I’ll be there to pick you up in an hour, okay? Our flight leaves at one-thirty.”
I quickly hung up the phone, wondering what in the world I had gotten myself into. I shouldn’t be doing this. I shouldn’t be going anywhere with Shawn—much less across the United States—but to be honest I missed Seattle and I missed him, even though I had seen him just last night.
I sat there, staring out the window and trying to figure out how I would explain my sudden absence to Michael and Calum, until I glanced down at my watch and realized it was already nine-thirty—I had just wasted fifteen valuable minutes that I could’ve spent getting packed up and ready.
Standing up from the bed that was sometimes too comfortable I quickly made my way into the bathroom, taking a quick shower before changing into my normal attire of black Vans, a sleeveless shirt, and a pair of jeans that had too many tears and holes in them.
