Thankfully I had a quiet rest of the day and night, and so that next morning I found myself being led out to the parking lot with the help of Ashton. Calum, Kevin, Russell, and Colin were standing by the Range Rover, but there was no sign of the others. "Where is everybody?" I asked, looking around.
"Dan and Shay had a concert in Tennessee, Christian and Dimitri went back to the Academy, and Danielle just left with little to no explanation again," Colin explained. "I guess they figured since the big fight was over we didn't need them here anymore."
"What about Michael?" I realized I hadn't even asked about him since I had been awake, and I immediately felt guilty. "Did we find him?"
Calum nodded. "Yes, thankfully we found him. He's back at the hotel safe and sound. Before you ask about Cody and Austin too, they were released last night and are somewhere around here. Where, I have no idea."
"I think I do," Ashton smiled, putting his arm around me once we were safely inside our vehicle. "Austin texted me and said he was going shopping at the mall, and I think I overheard Cody say he was going to California to go surfing."
I started laughing. That boy would probably live in the ocean if he could. "Let's just hope there are no sharks anywhere near there."
"Or any evil vampires near the mall, since that's where Austin got attacked last time," Calum added. "If I were him I'd just stay away."
The rest of the ride back to the hotel was relatively silent; the only other words that were exchanged between the six of us was when Colin asked what time we would be leaving for the airport in the morning. We were all unusually quiet, even Ashton, and I wasn't sure if it was because none of us had anything to say or for another reason. I think there was a part of all of us that kept waiting for Nathan to show up once more and finish us off for good. I knew I definitely felt that way.
When we arrived in front of the large sliding glass doors that led to the lobby, I was surprised when Ashton stepped out and, instead of following the others inside, walked around to the driver's side of the Range Rover. I instinctively moved to the front of the vehicle as well-even though I was inquisitive about what exactly he was doing, I felt the need to be beside him. I had to be touching him, and I couldn't do that if I remained in the backseat. "Where are we going?" I finally asked after a few minutes of silently watching him restart the vehicle and turn back onto the main road.
"I told you last night, we're going back to the lighthouse today," Ashton replied simply, leaning over to take my hand. "Don't you want to see the whales one last time before we leave Washington?"
"Of course," I said, lifting my hand that wasn't intertwined with Ashton's to turn on the radio. It was still on the same station that we had left it on earlier, and rock music immediately started blaring from the speakers. Normally I liked it loud, but for some reason today it annoyed me more than usual. Ashton must have noticed this, because he gave me a concerned look before returning his eyes back to the busy highway in front of him. "Are you okay, Lukey?"
I gave him my most reassuring smile. "I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" Ashton asked me again, and I sighed. "Yes, I'm sure."
                                          "Do you hurt anywhere?"
                                          "No, Ashton."
"Do I need to take you back to the hospital?"
                                           "No, Ashton."
"Are you telling me the truth?"
"Yes, Ashton." I don't know why he felt the need to ask me so many questions. I felt fine, other than having a small headache from all the medicine the doctors gave me before I left the hospital, but apparently he thought otherwise.
