chapter thirteen

We had the first assembly for term in our big multi purpose hall,  assemblies was always annoying to me. But as the health prefect  I had to attend every assembly, absents of prefects was easily noticeable.
Our Principal Mr. Robinson did the announcement and welcoming address, he was a heavily build man with white beard, I always thought his white beards made him look like Wole Soyinka. He welcomed us all including the new students, he started calling out the names of the newly admitted students so we could know them he said.
I got to know there were 9 new students in SS3, knowing two I wonder who they remaining 7 were, the transferred students in SS2 were up to 20 and their names were been called too, then SS1 since they were all new students in the senior section, their names were been called too.
I was wondering when the principal will be through when the girl behind me touched my arm, I turned to her " hi " I said realizing it was Chika my classmate.

" Gen. J. Galadima's son is joining us " she said excitedly.

" hmmm really " I said so she won't feel awkward.

" yes. His name was mentioned, its Steven. " she said behaving like a child who has seen a candy.

I sighed. " I see "

" the guy is so cute " she said dreamingly.

" you know him ? I asked.

" no. But I've heard of him, I've heard a lot about him. " she replied.

" really ? I asked curiously.

" oh c'mon Sarah, do you live in this city at all? How can you live in this town and not heard of him before? The great Steven " she said stressing the last syllable of his name.

I shrugged. " is he that popular "

" yes of course. You're really outdated " she squeezed her face at me.
" he's very popular "

I raised my eyebrows at her expectantly

" well, " she started.
" he's like super cool, he's cute, he's rich and classy and he's got swag.....I mean real swag!
But he's a player, I heard he has slept with all the pretty girls in his area. I heard he has three bedrooms in his dads mansion, one he use to sleep in, one he use to have sex with girls he likes, and the other to have sex with his one night stands. "

I was perplexed, was all this about Steven. Like the Steven I met.

" wo! he seems terrible " I said.

" no he's not oo. I heard he has the face of an angel "

" so you've not met him ?

" nah. But I will soon I hope " she said smiling.

" how comes you know all this stuffs about him then ?

" I told you he's popular, he's  a legend. " she stated.

I laughed at that " a legend huh?

" won't you like to meet him? She asked.

" I've met him already, during the holidays "   I replied.

" wow that's cool "
" how?

" he happens to be my cousin's friend " I said.

" the twins ? She asked

" yes, the twins " I answered.

ATTENTION!!!
the voice of the vice principal rang out loudly.
She had noticed no one was paying attention to the names been called. Why the even bother doing that I had no idea.
" we'll talk later " I said to her and turned to face the principal.

After the names, the principal made some announcements and gave few warnings especially to those who wore contrabands. He dismissed us saying today we will be given our syllables for the term.

I went out and met Rita and we headed towards our first class.

After classes I sat on one of the benches on the school ground, looking at my uniform and wondering why we had to wear it everyday, uniforms are so whack.
I was waiting for my uncle to come pick me, today was gross. I didn't even go to eat during break with my friends I just hid myself in the library. We didn't have much classes, most teachers just gave us the syllabus for the term and collected our holiday assignment.
I tried to ignore Sam all day even though I had the urge to talk to him, I had to sit in front of him in physics class because we had the class in the laboratory and all through the period I tried so hard not to turn and look at him even though I could feel his eyes on me. Luckily for me the teacher was brief he just gave us the terms syllables and left. He said we will be having our classes mostly in the lab, because we were going to be doing a lot of practicals this term.

I exited the lab like a rocket, and I didn't even know what I was running away from, who told me he gave a damn about me. Because the way he was behaving showed he didn't care, with that bitch always at his heels she clutched to him like a bug.

I kept swinging my legs as I sat on the bench, why is Hope taking so long? I asked myself. By now many students have left, and the school compound was almost empty. I wished Rita was here but she had left earlier, the twins had left too. I sat feeling uneasy and wondered why, I was hurt Sam didn't even made any attempts to talk to me. I closed my eyes and thought of home, my brother and parents. That was a habit I was used to, when I was worried or sad, I'll think of the good times and vacations we had and my mind will drift away.

" feeling sleepy? I heard someone say.
And I opened my eyes quickly at the familiarity of the voice.

" daddy !!!
