They pull up into the drive before getting out and going inside the house. Adaline knew once her father was home he'd be told her grades and probably come to her room and question why she was getting lower like her mother and annoy her yet again.

She sighed as she dragged her bag and books up the stairs and to her room at the end of the hall. She flopped down onto her bed for a few moments staring up at the ceiling wondering how on earth she manages to cope with her parents sometimes, before getting up and putting her school things away.

An hour later, she was sat at her desk with her hair in a messy bun and paperwork scattered across the desk as she focused hard on the geometry homework laid out in front of her.

She nibbled down on the corner of her lip as she tapped her pencil trying to figure out the next sum before a knock was heard at her door.

"May I come in?" Adaline's father spoke as the handle turned and the door opened slowly.

Adaline swiveled on her chair to face her father who now stood by the doorway leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed.

"So..your mother told me about your grades" he began to say but Adaline cut in before he could continue.

"Look Dad I know I didn't do as well as I usually do but I promise I'll try even harder next semester" she exclaimed but her father just nodded, signaling her to sit down next to him on the bed.

He patted the cream duvet beside him and Adaline got up and clambered onto the bed, crossing her legs and sitting facing him as he sat on the edge.

He put his hand onto her crossed leg and rubbed it reassuringly before speaking

"I know Ads, don't worry about your mother she just wants to make sure you do the best at school and exceed in life. Look, you just focus on having a term off and relax okay. You're beginning to get dark circles where you've not been sleeping properly" he said concerned.

He gently brushed his fingers underneath Adaline's eyes where there were tints of dark circles from the lack of sleep she had from staying up late working.

Ads was the nickname her father had given her ever since she was little. To most people she was known as Adaline but to some she had nicknames like Ads, Addy, Ada, A etc. but overall she was mostly known by Adaline.

Deep down she wasn't very keen on the nicknames but for her father, she allowed it.

Adaline's father kissed her forehead gently before getting up and leaving her room. She playfully hopped over to her bookcase in the corner and pulled off her recent book.

Opening to the page she was on and pulling her pretty bookmark with roses on, out onto her bed before laying on her stomach with her feet in the air behind her as she continued to read, falling back into the fantasy world created by the books story.
