Chapter Three

It was the first day of the spring term and Adaline was woken bright and early by the sun glistening through her curtains. She groaned as she turned away covering her eyes from the sunlight darting into her vision.

Her alarm beeped and she turned to just about make out 9am. Although it didn't seem very early, Adaline had been awake until early hours of the morning reading her book.

She was so engrossed into the book she had to keep reading the next few chapters and couldn't sleep without knowing what was going to happen next.

That was the issue with Adaline, she so easily fell into the fantasy worlds of books that she forgot where she was and disappeared from reality and instead became apart of whatever universe the book she was reading was based around.

Adaline had work for a few hours today, but she didn't mind working. Since freshman year her and her best friend, Evelyn had worked at a little cafe in their town called Bloomingdales. It was a little bakery cafe just on the corner of the street and Adaline had loved working there ever since they started two years ago.

Adaline strolled over to her bathroom and jumped in the shower. Twenty minutes later she got back out and after drying her hair she then got dressed. She put on her little black skirt, black tights and white blouse before tying her hair up into a ponytail and curling the ends of her hair.

She then did a minimal amount of makeup, because while at work she didn't really bother trying as it's not like there was anyone to impress there. Not that she was interested in impressing anyone at school either.

She hopped down the stairs leaving a step between before turning and going into the kitchen. "Morning Mum!" Adaline said cheerfully as she placed a bagel into the toaster and leant down onto the island counter with her head in her hands and watched her mum typing away at her laptop on the other end, concentrating with her glasses tilted down on the end of her nose.

Her parents were very hard workers and focused in their work, which meant they went away quite a lot on business trips over weekends or weekdays. Adaline didn't mind being left alone.

It was quite peaceful really, she didn't mind the quietness when she was by herself it meant she could focus better when reading her books.

Their neighbour Mrs Trueman was supposed to come and check up on Adaline when they were away, just as her parents had asked but Mrs Trueman went to sleep at 9pm so it didn't exactly help with keeping an eye on Adaline, and being slightly elderly she wasn't exactly sharp on supervising Adaline either.

Although she wasn't exactly a rebellious teen, Adaline at times did things she probably wasn't supposed to, like going out late at night. Something about late night walks was calming to Adaline but also quite adventurous.

Normally she took her book with her and would lay on the field up against a tree or down by the stream.

Although her best friend, Evelyn would usually complain about that and was normally complaining about going to parties or doing something more interesting.

Adaline's house was loud with all the conference calls or printer machines beeping at her parents working hard, at least when she was alone down by the stream she was in a much quieter place.

"Morning sweetie, how long are you working for today?" Adaline's mother asked, not looking up from her laptop.

The toaster popped the bagels back up and Adaline grabbed them before placing them down onto a china plate and buttering them with a knife.

"Until 6 again" she replied as she bit into her bagel.

She quickly ate it before taking a sip of a glass of water, before going over to the staircase and sitting on the bottom step leaning over and tying the shoelaces on her black high top converse.

The dress code for her work was very casual and although the shoes were meant to be black brogues, Adaline had managed to slip the code and wear her high top black converse (her favourite pair of shoes she owned).

She grabbed her satchel off of the banister, before rushing out of the door and down the street.

"Morning, Mrs Trueman" she said cheerfully as she strolled past her neighbour who was stood outside watering some plants.

"Good morning dear, still working hard?" Mrs Trueman replied chuckling and Adaline laughed

"Like always" she replied as she strolled off along the path.

It took exactly half an hour for Adaline to get to work, that being when she was walking of course. She only occasionally had rides to work and most the time it was only because there was a storm that day and her mother would say it was too dangerous for her to walk.

Adaline loved to walk everywhere, if she could, she would walk to school but considering it was 40 minutes away her mother insisted on taking and collecting her everyday.

The door bell jingled as Adaline walked into the cafe and over to the counter before ducking under the latch gate and hanging her bag up onto the hanger in the back.

She took her apron off of the side and tied it in a knot at the back before making her way out to the front where Evelyn was stood, cleaning out the coffee machine.

"No customers yet?" Adaline questioned noticing how empty the cafe was and Evelyn shook her head.

"Nope, not that I'm complaining though. Maybe if we don't have much business today, Josie will let us go home earlier" Evelyn replied as she emptied the contents of the coffee machine into the bin beside her.

Josie was their boss, she was a middle aged woman who had owned the cafe for a few years, having it passed down by her mother and her mother by her great grand mother. Apparently Bloomingdales had been a running business for many years, and yet to this day was still open.

"Oh!, you're coming to Joshua's party tonight right?" Evelyn asked as she spun round to face Adaline who was stood leaning against the counter.

"Uh yeah I'm not sure I think maybe I'll just stay home-" she went to say but Evelyn cut her off shaking her head senselessly, as she crossed her arms.

"Ads you are so going okay, I'm not letting you stay home and miss another great party again" she ordered, her face dead serious but Adaline just let out a small laugh.

"What's so funny?" Evelyn questioned.

"Nothing, you just get so serious sometimes. Fine, I'll come..maybe" Adaline replied and at first Evelyn didn't buy it but eventually gave in.

"Okay, well you know what that means then.." Evelyn said in a singsongy voice, Adaline groaned putting her head down into her hands, shaking her head. In synch they both spoke at the same time, however Evelyn's was must more enthusiastic than Adaline

"Shopping!" Evelyn squealed, she was one to get very excited over the smallest things, while on the other hand Adaline was not.

"Can't wait.." Adaline groaned, unsure of why her best friend got so excited over shopping. She understood it partially but not the fact Evelyn could buy a new outfit every single day.

"Okay, after work we can go to the mall and then you can come back to mine for dinner if you'd like?" Evelyn asked and Adaline knew that she didn't have a real say in whether or not they were, she knew that they would go anyway.

"Okay" she replied and just then the door bell jingled and customers began to pour in.

Evelyn tied her apron and stood by the cashier, and Adaline tightened her ponytail before picking up the notepad and pen ready to take and deliver orders to tables.
