The Wedding That Never Was
PrologueI stared at him, he looked so devastated and I wished I could do something rather than stand here looking at him. He snatched the bowtie out of his tux, unbuttoned the two buttons of his dress shirt and threw the bowtie on the floor.
He raked his hair with his hands, the neatly fixed hair of his now a mess. He turned his head to the side and looked at the velvet box that contained the two wedding bands and beside the box was the sapphire engagement ring that she gave before she truly ran out of the church.
I was surprised that she ran. I mean, she was so in love with him, she was so possessive and was always going on her way on showing me that he was hers and could never be mine.
I gave up the moment he put a ring on her finger because I knew, I could never compete with that. I could see he was happy. They both were. I was there while they were planning this wedding.
She looked so radiant today wearing that gown of hers. I knew something was wrong the moment she asked everyone out of the room to answer that phone call but I never thought she'd run and leave him.
Now, here we were still at the church, the guests had left when it seemed she wasn't going to return. He sunk to the floor and just sat there looking down at the floor.
I didn't know what to do. There wasn't any protocol with a blotched wedding.
"You can leave."
"I can't." because I didn't want to leave him alone. I didn't know what he'd do.
He rose, he turned to look at the altar and laughed mirthlessly, "You didn't even give me a chance to be a better husband for the second time." he shook his head and started walking. He passed by me, I spun just so I could watch him leave, he stopped, "I'll be fine. Just call all the guests and apologize. Send back the gifts or if they won't want it, donate it all." he started to walk again but turned back to me and said, "Cancel the reservation. It's no use now. See you at the office tomorrow." and he left. They were supposed to go to the Caribbean for their honeymoon, it was going to be a surprise for her but guess he was right.
I looked back at the altar then at the floor, he left the rings. I headed towards it and picked it up. As I stared at the sapphire engagement ring and the wedding bands, I remembered how I wished I was the one wearing that ring, I remembered thinking how pretty it was but now, it was tainted.
It wasn't beautiful anymore, it was ugly. A remembrance of a wedding that never was.
