Damon's POV
"Where have you been. You're late." I ignore Bill as I settle down in an empty seat and throw my hands across the back of the sofa. I can feel their eyes on me. Malik, Wayne, and Lamar. The only two that were missing was Vincent and Miko. They were stationed at the hospital with her. "Damon, I asked you a question."
Peering my eyes at his, I let out a long and irritated sigh. "I had to take care of some business."
Bill opened his mouth but didn't say what he wanted to say. He brushed it off and sat down in a chair. "I called this meeting to talk about some of the things that's been going on," he began as he rubbed his face with his grubby hands. "From what I've been told. They don't know what's gonna happen. Nothing new has changed in her condition. So, eventually, we will need to have Vincent and Miko switch shifts. They will need to work here and, I'mma need some of you to work the hospital." He then leaned back in the chair and looked at the four of us. His eyes scanned all of us slowly. "Malik..." I looked at him from the corner of my eye. "You will work nights at the hospital. "Wayne..." I rolled my eyes. He was a new one. "You will work days." None of us said anything. "Lamar...you will be asked to work whenever you are needed.
My eyebrows crinkled when I didn't hear my name called in all that.
"Vincent called and told me that we need to pick up Liyah's car from her friend's house." His eyes flickered over to Malik. "There's a spare in the kitchen at the main house," he told him. "Bring back here and park it in the garage with the rest of 'em."
Malik nodded his head.
"That's all for now," Bill concluded, but then his eyes fell to me. "Damon, I need you to stay." Very slowly, I lowered my back down in the chair and watched as the rest of the men walked out of the room in silence. Lamar was the last one out and he shut the door.
My eyes fell on the freshly waxed floor while I waited patiently for him to speak. He cleared his throat. Loudly. And I looked up at him to see him pulling his cap off of his head. "What the hell was you doin' at the beach house?"
"Vincent told you," I observed.
"He called," he said with a nod.
"He wasn't supposed to be there, either," I pointed out.
"Actually, yes, he was. I brought it up to him a minute ago." Bill then leaned forward in his chair. He kept his brown eyes on me. "You're walking on thin ice, man. Do you know that?"
I didn't respond.
"Did you forget what your job was?"
I still didn't answer.
"You are supposed to protect her at all costs. I told you, in the beginning, she was difficult. She's not gonna want you around her all time and to give her her space. I told you that. But that space is supposed to be limited. If you don't know where she's going you are supposed to go with her!"
