I woke up and felt someone sitting on my bed. I opened my eyes. It was Jackson.

My heart leaped at the sight of him, which surprised me, because that's never happened to me before. Jackson just stared down at me, he didn't smile or anything, just stared.

"Mr. Blackwood!" He called out behind him. Mr. Blackwood walked over minutes later and said, "Ah, Rose, good morning. I'll be back to talk in a minute. Someone has a cut that needs potion."

Jackson nodded and I made a face. "What?" He asked me. "'Someone has a cut that needs potion' just sounds so pleasant I needed to show it in a facial expression." Jackson laughed.

I realized I liked his laugh. It was smooth but raspy in the boyish way that made it sound good. His smile was nice too, he had perfect white teeth.

Mr. Blackwood came back a few minutes later and leaned over me. He held his hand on my forehead as if he was checking for a fever. He checked my pulse and felt my head again.

"You're in good shape. You should probably rest today, but first, I think me and Jackson have some explaining to do." Jackson looked shocked. "Me? I'm never good at this stuff."

Mr. Blackwood smiled at the boy. "You can offer some knowledge I cannot, as she is you age, and you saw the man who attacked her."

"Um, okay." It was the first time I ever saw Jackson unsure of himself.

"So, I guess I shall start with the history of us Magicians?" Mr. Blackwood asked no one in particular. "Yes, that would be nice." I said. "Just, the shortened version, please." I added afterwards.

"Well, it all started with the 3 ancient Magicians. Rosalinda Clearwater. Jonathan Castor. Michelson Blackwood. They were the very first of the Magicians."

"They had known of each other for a long time, and one day they decided to meet in person. They met and realized they were all true in the art of magic. They split up again and decided to protect those magical powers, they hid."

"Soon Rosalinda Clearwater got married, and told her husband of her powers. Soon, the 2 others got married and had kids. They had all guessed that the magical jean would spread through the families and through history. And they were right."

"When they all had kids, and then their children had kids, the magical jean carried itself through the families, for it is a very strong jean, and overpowers the normal ones."

"So, time went on. Most parents taught their children to use their powers only in a time they were extremely needed. But, the Castors did not."

"They let their children use their powers for anything, and that created problems in the magical world. The other magical families, and now there were quite a lot, told the Castors they needed to stop, for mortals could not no of our powers just yet."

"But, the Castors wouldn't listen. They kept using magic, they said they wanted to be free. Soon, other magical families started to use magic more often, and that didn't end well."

"One day, a Mettur child showed his powers to a crowd of human children, so from there on a chain started, rumors spread, we were all forced into deep hiding."

"That's why we created this camp, you see. It protects us. The Castors still did not agree. We went to war, in 1934, but no mortals were involved."

"Our side won, and all of the Castor supporters came to our camp and were safe. But the true blooded Castors did not. They fled far away and we haven't seen a full blooded Castor yet."

"That was, until about 9 years ago. A man named Michael Castor appeared and threatened us. He told us there would be another war, but this one bloodier. The Blackwoods fled the country to live in England, it is why I have a slight accent in case you were wondering, but I came to work here."

"The Clearwater's stayed in the U.S. though, and they supported your dad. He moved to fight Michael Castor. He died trying. He died when you were about what, 8?"

I swallowed and said, "Yeah, I was 7, about to turn 8. He, uh, he didn't get to come to my birthday party." I felt my eyes start to sting and fought back the tears.

"Well, anyway, that's how he died. But he died fighting. He was a hero. He also destroyed Michael Castor. He did it to protect you, Rose."

"Oh." Was all I said.

"So, now that you have the shortened version of that, you should know about magicians. Jackson, can you do this part? I need to go check on someone."

Jackson swallowed. "Yeah, I guess I can." "Wonderful!" And with that, Mr. Blackwood left.

"Okay, so magicians are like, um how should I put this, we don't have unlimited power. We have to learn to control it, and to do that fully takes more years of training than we can offer."

"So, can you tell me the different kinds of powers? How you know I'm one of you? How do I know what powers I have?" I asked Jackson.

"We just know you're one of us, it's hard to explain. You'll find what your power is, you see, you can only ever have one power."

"Okay... Continue." I said.

"Alright the different kinds of powers. Well, there are the originals: earth, air, fire, and water. Then, there's ice, art, music, wisdom, fighting, healing, enchantments/words. That's kinda the whole list. Then there's a few kinds of dark magic: storms, darkness in general, and dark mind magic. Then there's one more, electricity. Its the most unpredictable of them all, and only 2 people have ever had it, Michael Castor, and your dad."

I thought that over for a minute. "Wow." Was all I could bring myself to say.
