"Rainy!" I ran after her as she rushed down the hill. "Rainy! Stop," I yelled, trying to reach out to her.

I got a burst of speed and almost tackled the girl. "Ow," Rainy yelled when I stepped on her foot trying to regain my balance. "Sorry!" I stood up and brushed dirt off my legs.

"Why are you so upset? And Jackson? I'm the one who might die!" Rainy took a shaky breath and said, "I can't have someone else in my life die. I just can't do it! I think Jackson feels the same way." I just stared.

"What do you mean? My-" I started, but Rainy cut me off. "Please don't start with that! Both of my parents are dead. My little brother is dead. My older sister is dead. Jackson has gone through the same thing! We can't handle someone else in our lives who could die." I started staring again.

I reached out and touched Rainy's shoulder, but she jerked away, crying. "I'm not going to die. For you, I won't die. And for Jackson. I promise." "Don't make promises you can't keep," Rainy said through tears. "But I will keep it. I will. Do you think I want to die? God, you know I don't. The thought frightens me to no end, Rainy."

The girl looked up. "You pwomise?" She pouted like a little kid asking for candy. "I swear on my life." I meant it as a joke, but it came out wrong and Rainy frowned. "Sorry! But I do."

Rainy wiped her eyes and smiled. "Alright, but can we not mention it? Like, at all. It- It's to hard." I nodded a little to vigorously and Rainy laughed.

"Now all you have to do is convince Jackson you are no longer a ticking time-bomb." I laughed, then frowned. It would undoubtably be harder to convince Jackson of my safeness than anyone else, even Rainy.

"Oh, by the way, I wanted to tell tell you: Rainy isn't my real name." "I figured as much." "It's Rebecca. But you can't call me that in public. Please don't. It's my mortal life in one word." I nodded.

"Alright Rebecca. Lets go get some dinner." Rainy cringed at the sound of her name, but she let me put my arm around her and lead her away.
