Based (honestly, pretty heavily) off of the cartoon movie Monster House. I compiled this video above (I made it as short as possible) to show a background to the movie if you haven't seen it.
Non-Sides AU.

For as long as the neighborhood had existed, the crotchety old man had lived in the same dark house. He wasn't even all that old, maybe in his 30's by now, but compared to the all the kids that talked about him, he was old.
The unemotional man, known only to his neighbors as Mr. Nebbercracker, would steal anything that came onto his lawn: newspapers, balls, kites, and most recently, another tricycle. He would terrorize anyone who came onto his property, ill-intent or not, which included the little tricycle girl who accidentally veered off the sidewalk into the grass.
Virgil himself had never ventured onto the property, despite living right across the street his whole life, until one Halloween when his friend Roman had come over.
"Come on, Virge!" Roman gave him sad eyes and held his hands together pleadingly, even getting down on his knees to beg. "You have to go get it!"
Virgil glared down at his groveling best friend before his eyes darted across the street to watch Roman's basketball as it sat in the yard of the grouchy man.
"Nuh uh, why don't you get it?!" Virgil stepped away from Roman like he was crazy.
"Because, because..." Roman glanced back and forth between his basketball and his friend, trying to think of a reason to not go in the yard himself. He could never admit to being scared of something. "BeCAUSE you're the one that says you're an adult now. You go get it."
Virgil glared and crossed his arms, turning away from his friend. "No way."
Roman pinched his eyes but then grinned. "Oh okay then... I guess you are just some sort of baby, then..."
He knew he had Virgil at that. The emo pre-teen hated being called a baby due to being teased by his "baby-sitter", as Roman often liked to refer to the young woman as.
Frustrated, but also not wanting to be mocked, Virgil caved in and stormed across the street in a huff, not fully processing what he was about to do. As he stepped up onto the curb, it sank in and he turned to Roman with anxiety written on his face. "I can't do it."
"Sure you can," Roman chuckled and gave Virgil a hard push, making him stumble past the sidewalk until he was starting up the pathway to the front door. "You're already halfway there."
Staring up nervously at the house, Virgil slowly took a few steps forward, just expecting the man to come out and yell at him. Deciding to just grab the ball and get it over with quickly, Virgil took off running up the lawn.
When he was about to grab the ball, a shadow crept into his view and he looked up in fear as the old man reached out to grab him, yelling at him to get off the property.
"Why can't you brats just leave me alone?!" The man grabbed ahold of him just as Virgil thought he had escaped, and held him up, shaking him in anger.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Virgil kept trying to apologize and say anything that would get the man to drop him. Roman yelled as well, but the self-proclaimed brave child wouldn't so much as step onto the sidewalk.
Mid-scream from the man, he just suddenly trailed off. Virgil's eyes were wide with fear as the man dropped him and held a hand to his heart. Within seconds, the man fell forward on top of Virgil.
