Soulmate AU.

Warning: cussing.

...

I told Patton everything. He's been my best friend for years. He's stayed through even my emo phase, and never gave up on me. For the longest time, I'd secretly hoped that he was my soulmate.

A foolish wish, really. So, when the name of my soulmate appeared on my wrist, I started wearing hoodies. I wasn't gay, at least, not publicly. There was no way I was going to sport a guy's name on my wrist. My poor soul couldn't stand more bullying. I didn't even tell Patton.

I choked. "His name is what?"

Patton was extremely excited. Maybe I'd just heard him wrong. "It's Roman! My soulmate's name is Roman!"

Nope, I heard him right. "That's... that's great Patton."

I didn't listen to what else he had to say, although it started with "I bet he's tall, and intelligent, and-"

How the hell was I going to explain to Patton that I was dating his soulmate?

It had been half a year since I'd learned the name of my soulmate. I hadn't met him yet; hadn't even bothered to look for him. But then again, neither had he. Either he didn't know my name, or he didn't bother looking for me either.

"What about you?"

I snapped out of my thoughts. "What?"

"Your soulmate," Patton elaborated. "Has his name appeared yet?"

I felt like I was just going to spontaneously combust right then and there. Patton knew I had a boyfriend now, but I'd never talked about him. How had things gone so sideways so quickly?

"Ah," I tutted. "Nope, not yet."

Patton nods. "Well that's too bad. At least your boyfriend doesn't have his soulmate's name either. Maybe you guys could be each other's soulmates and just don't know it."

"Yeah." I nod. "Maybe."

What the fuck was I going to tell Roman?

I ended up not saying anything. How could I? Roman didn't know Patton was his soulmate yet. They didn't even go to the same school, so it's not like they were likely to find each other. Right?

It was months later, and I was still the only one to know the secret. It was wrong, I knew it, to know my boyfriend and best friend were soulmates, but to keep them separated. But if I was honest, Patton didn't seem to mind.

"You what?" I had to make sure.

Patton smiles as he begins to eat his lunch. "I got a boyfriend."

"Who is it?"

He frowns. "Well, it's not my soulmate, but he's this really cute senior that always hangs out in the library at lunch."

"So, I've never met him?" It would make sense. What kind of nerd spends lunch hour in the library? I start to suck down my soda, enjoying the only time I could buy one in this crap school.

Patton shakes his head. "Probably not. I've only talked to him a few times, but he's really smart. His name is Logan."

I literally choke this time. Worried, Patton hits my back as I cough as my drink went down the wrong pipe. As if that would help. "Are you okay, Virge?"

Trying to catch my breath, I bite my sleeve to try and stifle my coughs, noticing how a few people sitting at other lunch tables were staring at me. "Yeah, I-" I'm dating your soulmate, and you're dating mine.
