Ship: Prinxiety
...
Something woke Virgil.
Now, he wasn't the deepest sleeper, in the times he actually fell asleep. Anything could've woken him, from something as soft as rain or one of the other Sides awake somewhere else in the mind making noise.
He would've chalked it up as one of those things, had Virgil not noticed that he was sharing a bed with Roman. Well, he had been.
Roman stood on the bed above him, each one of his legs stood defensively on either side of Virgil's body where he lay. Virgil inhaled sharply, afraid, when he saw that Roman had conjured his samurai sword. He held it like he was preparing for a fight.
In the dark, Virgil could tell that Roman was still asleep.
"Roman," Virgil whispered. He tried to slide out of Roman's protection over him, but Roman swung the sword over his head. "Geez Roman, stop!"
He didn't answer.
Trying to remain calm, Virgil decided he shouldn't make anymore sudden moves, in fear of Roman accidentally taking his head off while seemingly trying to protect him. Watching Roman, Virgil could see his head flick back and forth, eyes closed but still trying to find the danger.
Even in his own head, Roman couldn't feel safe.
Virgil felt himself deflate. He'd shared his self-doubt with Roman, and in return, Roman had admitted to his own demons. The two of them had found a sort-of connection in that, forming the roots of what would become their bettering relationship.
Most times, Virgil couldn't even really tell that the Roman he knew now and used to know were the same. Roman acted the same as he always had around Logan and Patton. Virgil anxiously made himself believe that Roman was just playing with his emotions, trying to make him believe that he actually cared for him.
But as Virgil learned over time, Roman's mask was just as believable as his had been.
"Roman!" Virgil hissed quietly. He knew it wasn't the best idea to wake a sleepwalker, especially one that was holding a sword at his nose, but Virgil was determined to end Roman's nightmare. The tears wetting his eyelashes indicated that.
Realizing he couldn't get up to Roman's level to help, Virgil knew he would need to get Roman down to his level. Thinking quickly, Virgil tries to figure the best way to get Roman down without being in the way of Roman's sword.
Reaching up with both his hands, Virgil hit the back of Roman's knees, sending him crashing backwards onto Virgil's lap. Feeling like the attack came from behind him, Roman flipped around and swung his sword at the invisible enemy. Getting the chance to, Virgil sat up and wrapped his arms around Roman, limiting his ability to fight back by pinning his arms to his body.
The sword rolled silently out of his hand to the bed while Roman tried to pry his attackers' arms from around him. He cried out weakly in his sleep, struggling against Virgil's hug. "Shhh, Ro it's okay."
Virgil rocked the two of them slowly, trying to settle Roman from his nightmare. After a minute, Roman seemed to fall back into a dreamless sleep. Smiling in relief, Virgil set Roman back down next to him, covering him back up in the blankets.
Laying down next to him, Virgil listened, assuring himself that Roman's uneven breathing had gone back to normal, and it was. He was back fast asleep.
Virgil knew Roman still wasn't quite okay yet, but he knew he would be there for him.
...
This is based on how much I think about how Roman is not okay, canonically.
