For a long time, it was just the two of them. Patton had Logan, and Logan had Patton. They only had brief conversations with their host, Thomas. Mostly, the two of them just influenced Thomas to make certain decisions based on what the two of them agreed on.
That was how it had always been.
When Patton got the feeling that a new trait was going to appear, he was ecstatic. Logan, on the other hand, was wary. It had been so long since a new trait was created. Would their appearance get in the way of their solid system? Would they try and take over his way of life?
Would Patton like them better than him?
It was a taking a long time, Logan was sure. The trait had yet to appear, and all Patton would say was to "have patience. They'll appear when they're ready."
Logan sat silently and listened, trying to hear what Patton could hear. Since Patton was the first trait born, he was able to tell when a new trait was forming. Logan heard nothing. "Well they should hurry up."
Patton opened his eyes and smiles at Logan. "Don't forget it took you several years to be born."
"The brain is a very complicated muscle," Logan argued. "It takes time to create that."
"And even longer to finish creating, frontal lobe development and all." Patton laughed when Logan gave him a pout in return.
A few days later, Logan woke up in the middle of the night to Patton jumping onto his bed. He was screaming. "Logan Logan Logan LOGAN wake UP!"
Instantly terrified, Logan grabbed his glasses and put them on. He looked at Patton and was shocked to see that he was smiling. "Patton, what?"
He was giggling and bouncing on the bed. "There are two of them!"
And that was how Patton and Logan found themselves creating two bedrooms for their new Sides whenever they did arrive.
"I think we should paint this one green." Patton pointed to the walls of the room they were standing in. He had already summoned standard furniture for the room and was talking about decorating it as if it were going to be a nursery.
Logan had to talk him down from a zoo theme, and they instead just left the walls as they were for now. The new Sides could decorate how they wanted to when they arrived.
"I'm so excited, Logan!" Patton squealed. "I thought I was given everything I could ever want when you joined me, but now I've got two new kiddos to dote on!"
Ignoring his instinct to correct Patton that the two new Sides would be the same age as Patton, despite only just being born, Logan couldn't help but realize that he felt guilty.
Although it wasn't Logan's fault, Patton was alone in the mindscape for years before Logan was born. He was responsible for Thomas' early traits and had to do it all by himself.
Once he had some time to himself, Logan was able to decipher that he was also feeling nervousness. Two more Sides? What if they were bad and would rise up against them? What if they didn't take him and Patton's superiority due to experience seriously? What if they overtook them?
"No no no!"
Logan jumped out of bed when he heard the yell. Patton was in their common room, where Logan left him. He was standing with his eyes closed.
"Patton, what's wrong?" Logan got his attention.
When Patton looked at him, he was crying. "I-it's the new Sides. Something is happening to them."
