05: I'm Coming Out...Again!

“Keith, are you okay?” Lance asked.

“Yeah, why do you ask?” Keith looked up at Lance.

“You've been awfully quiet all day and you've barely eaten a bite of your lunch.”

“Lance is right. Is something on your mind?” Pidge asked.

“I'm fine.” he looked down at his uneaten lunch.

“If there's something you want to tell us, you can,” Lance told him. “We won't judge you. We’re your friends.”

Keith looked up to see Lance smiling at him. He looked around at the people he called his friends ever since middle school. He sighed and decided to tell them and get it over with.

“I do have something to tell you all,” Keith said. “I hope that what I say now won't change the way you see me. I'm still me, and this fact won't change anything.”

“Keith, you can trust us even if you're secretly part of an evil alien race that's trying to rule the world,” Pidge fixed her glasses. “We wouldn't tell another soul if you asked us.”

“What is it with you and Shiro talking about me being an evil alien?” Keith asked. “Why not a good alien?”

“I dunno.” Pidge shrugged.

“You kinda just have that evil alien vibe coming from you,” Allura interjected.

“It’s because you’re that angsty teenage kid who always broods in the corner alone,” Lance smirked.

“I’m not angsty, and can I please say what I need to say before I think myself out of it,” Keith rolled his eyes.

“Of course, Keith,” Hunk said, interrupting what Lance was going to say next.

Keith took a deep breath before he said, “I’m gay...and I’ve known since tenth grade. I decided to tell you guys now because...I want to start my senior year as my full self and I felt that hiding my sexuality...or pretending I was something I’m not was not me being my whole self. I hope this doesn’t hurt our friendship, and-uh, Lance? What are you doing?”

“Changing your username on the group chat,” Lance told him as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“But only on our private chat,” Lance noted.

“So...you guys are okay with this?” Keith asked doubtfully.

“Of course, dude, I’m happy for you,” Hunk gave him a big smile.

“Yeah, that’s great, Keith,” Pidge gave him a thumb up.

“Congratulations,” Allura gave him a small, short of forced smile.

“I say we celebrate this occasion,” Lotor suggested.

“No, no, that’s not nece-”

“Ooh! Yeah, we could go see that new movie...um, what’s the name of it?” Lance blurted, and stopped to think about what movie he was thinking about. “Oh! Love, Simon!”

“I, honestly, wouldn’t be too opposed to that idea,” Keith agreed. “I’ve been wanting to see it, but I didn’t want to go alone.”

“You could’ve asked us to see it with you,” Hunk said.

“I know, but I didn’t want you to feel obligated to say yes cuz...it’s an LGBTQ+ movie and I didn’t know if you would be uncomfortable seeing it or not and I didn’t wanna take my chances and-”
