14: Coming Out: Family Edition Pt. 3

Keith was silent as the two of them stared at each other. Mr. McClain, or Joseph, looked at Keith judgmentally up and down. Seeing as he was frowning, Keith figured he didn’t like what he saw. Apparently fed up with waiting for him, Lance walked in calling, “Keith, what’re you waiting fo-”

Lance saw his father staring down Keith and vice versa.

“Papá, hi,” Lance waved at him.

“So...this is the boy who stole…” Joseph sighed and rubbed his face.

“...you don’t accept me...do you?” Lance looked down at the ground.

“Why can’t you just choose? Girls to be specific.”

“Because that’s just who I am, dad. I can’t choose because I’m bisexual and I love both boys and girls equally.”

“What ever happened to that Allura girl you always talk about?”

“I did like her, but...now I only flirt with her for fun and because I was in denial too, until I realized that...I also like boys.”

“Lance...please...you can’t do this.”

“Do what? Be myself?! You want me to lie to myself again!?”

“If that’s what makes you norm-”

“No, dad! I’m bi and I’m proud of it! I’m finally able to be who I am! No more lies!”

“But, so-...Lance, what about the big family you wanted? You can’t get that with a boy. Especially with this one. He doesn’t look like family material…”

“Hey! You can’t talk about Keith that way!”

In hearing his name, Keith jumped out of his confusion. He had no idea what was going on, but he didn’t like the sound of it.

“Lance?” Keith looked at Lance, who looked just about ready to cry.

Lance’s breath hitched as he spoke, “Come on, Keith...I need to pack.”

“What?” Joseph asked.

“What?!” Rosa called too, just walking into the living room.

Lance didn’t respond as he went to his room to grab some things he’d need. Keith looked at Rosa and Joseph confused.

“What just happened?” Rosa asked.

“I, um...I don’t speak Spanish, but...I don’t think his father accepted him,” Keith said shyly. “I’m gonna go see if I can go talk some sense into him.”

“This is all your fault,” Joseph growled.

Keith stopped on the first step. “My fault? Heh, I’m not the one with a father who’s so unaccepting.”

With that, Keith went into Lance’s room.

Rosa turned to Joseph and gave him an angry glare.

“What?!” Joseph looked at his wife. “Somebody had to tell him.”

“What do you mean?! That boy is perfectly normal for loving whoever he wants!” Rosa yelled with tears in her eyes. “And now because of you, we’re gonna lose him!”

“What?!?” Veronica ran into the living room. “Lance is leaving?!”

“No! Why?” Sylvio cried and hugged Veronica’s leg.

“What did you do, dad?” Rachel crossed her arms.

“Is everyone going against me?” Joseph asked. “He’s gotta be going through a phase or something.”

“That’s our son, Joseph!” Rosa cried. “It’s not a phase! That’s just how he is and I love him for being brave enough to tell us, even though he was afraid of not being accepted. And now, you made his biggest fear come to life. You didn’t accept him. And now we’re gonna lose him. And it’s all your fault!”

“Rosa, calm dow-”

“NO! Don’t you f**king touch me!” Rosa cursed and stomped up the stairs to go to Lance’s room.

The family gasped. Rosa never ever cursed in front of the children...which really meant that she never cursed at all. The siblings all glared at their father.

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Marco sneered.

“Oh, please. Lance is just being dramatic,” Joseph scoffed.

“I don’t think that’s the case this time, dad,” Rachel wiped her eyes.

“Where’s he gonna go?!”Joseph questioned.

“Lance, please don’t do this!” everyone heard Rosa beg as Lance’s door opened.

“I’ll send Shiro and Keith back to get the rest of my stuff at some point,” Lance said as he walked down the stairs with his backpack on.

“Lance, please don’t go,” Sylvio ran up to Lance and hugged him.

“Oh, Sylvio, I won’t be gone forever, promise,” Lance ruffled the kid’s hair. “I’ll return when I’m ready.”

“Lance, no-”

“No, guys, this is Lance’s decision,” Luis interrupted Rachel. “If this is what’s best for him, we should still support his decision. It doesn’t mean that we won’t miss him. Cuz we definitely will.”

Everyone was silent, showing they had to face the fact that Lance was leaving.

“Can we at least hug you goodbye?” Nadia pouted, tears flowing down her cheeks.

“Of course you can,” Lance nodded. “I’m gonna miss you guys too.”

And in a heartbeat all of Lance’s siblings, niece, nephew and his mom gathered in one big group hug.

“I’m gonna start the motorcycle,” Keith told Lance. “Come out when you’re ready okay?”

“We’re gonna miss you so much, Lance,” Sylvio cried.

“Who’s gonna make musical references with me?” Veronica whimpered.

“Who’s gonna braid my hair before I go to school?” Nadia cried.

“I know, I’m gonna miss you all so much,” Lance kissed everyone’s foreheads. “I promise it won’t be long before I come back. I just need some time, alright?”

“Come home soon, mi hijo,” Rosa hugged Lance tighter. “And please please please be safe.”

“I will, mamá, I promise.”

Reluctantly, one by one, they let go and Lance headed toward the door, his backpack on his back, which for some reason felt heavier than when he packed it. Lance shrugged it off and waved goodbye to his family. He sighed as he walked out the door. He saw Keith leaning on his bike waiting for him and looking at his phone.

Keith looked up and smiled sympathetically.

“You ready to go?” Keith asked as he hopped onto his ride.

Lance took one last look at the house he grew up in. “Yeah.”

Lance hopped on behind Keith and instantly wrapped his arms around Keith’s torso. The older could already feel tears on the back of his shirt. With a sigh, he started riding home.

Well, season 6 is out and I'm shook. Remember when they said it was emotional? They weren't kidding! I'm one of those people who don't really show emotion. Like, if someone on a show died, I wouldn't cry. This season of Voltron? Made me cry. If it made me cry, then you know it's a mess and I need someone to talk to about it, but no one in my family watches it 😭😭. Go enjoy getting your heart broken!
