18: Keithy in the Bathroom during Pre-Calc

Keith walked into the Pre-Calculus class he had with Allura. He was going to watch her carefully for any strange behavior. He sat in his normal seat, which was next to Allura.

Allura looked over to Keith, but didn't say anything. Keith raised an eyebrow and greeted her. She only waved back with a small smile.

“Are you okay?” Keith asked.

Maybe she just wasn't feeling well for a while. Maybe that's what triggered the strange behaviour.

“Fine,” Allura sighed, avoiding eye contact.

“You sure?”

“Yeah, why are you suddenly so concerned about me?” Allura snapped.

Keith shrunk in his seat and put his hands up in surrender. “Sorry. I'm just checking on you. You've been acting weird lately...”

“Weird how?”

“You seem like you're avoiding me...I thought we were friends,” Keith told her.

“We are,” Allura said.

“Then what changed?”

Allura looked toward the front of the room, not answering his question.

Keith hesitated before he quietly asked, “...is it because I'm gay?”

Allura’s eyes widened.

“Shiro told you, didn't he,” Allura accused.

“No...I figured it out on my own,” Keith looked down disappointed.

Shiro was right. Allura did have a problem with him being gay.

“Keith, you're too dense to figure-"

“I'm smarter than you think, alright!?”

“Mr. Kogane, if you are going to talk through my class, please do it so that you aren't disrupting the people who want to learn,” the teacher scolded.

“Sorry, sir,” Keith blushed at the unwanted attention.

As soon as the teacher went back to teaching, Allura whispered, “I know Shiro told you, you don’t have to deny it. Either way-”

“I don’t care what you’re gonna say,” Keith interrupted. “I know how you really feel about me, so...you can stop pretending you’re my friend.”

“Keith…”

But Keith was done with the conversation, seeing as he didn’t respond to her. He felt sick to the stomach...he felt like crying. Allura and he weren’t that close, but it still hurt to know she wasn’t a true friend to the end. He let her get too close. He knew this would happen eventually and he was still shocked.

What if all of his other friends felt the same way that Allura did? What if they didn’t truly accept him? What if they were just tolerating him so they wouldn’t hurt his feelings? What if they gave up the facade and turned their backs on him? What if they abandoned him? What if-

“-gane? Keith, hey, hey, calm down,” a voice was saying , but it sounded so distant…

Keith looked up and saw a blurry version of his teacher.

“Mi-ste-er B-ur-fo-or-d?” his voice came out shaky and sobby.

“Hey, hey, stay with me, okay? Deep breaths in and out.”
