Words cut like a knife.
You laugh it off and when you
see that I'm not laughing with you,
you tell me it was "only a joke".
But it wasn't just a "joke"
you knew that was a tough spot
and that why you said it.
I tell you that it isn't funny,
that it actually hurt me.
You tell me to "lighten up".
well, well, well,
we'll see next time when I speak the thoughts that I keep in,
not daring say them because I know they'd hurt you.
but I'll say them
and laugh a wicked laugh,
Then I'll say
it was only a joke.
