*2 DAYS PRIOR TO MEETING*
"I- I don't know!" I cried out, backing away from my classmates. Rose, a girl in my class who I never had gotten to know too well, laid on the floor, holding her stomach in pain.
"What did you do?!" one of the boys repeated.
"I SAID I DON'T KNOW!" I shouted, books from the selves and experiments around the floor switching places with my scream. A few students noticed, furrowing their eyebrows even more. Their thoughts rang out in my head, all among the lines of fear.
"(Y/n), I need you to go stand by the sink. It's gonna be okay," my teacher's sub for the day, Mr. Coulson, tried to comfort. I nodded in fear of myself and walked to the corner of the room, sitting on the counter.
I looked around my science class, the worry now directed towards Rose. Her face was slightly scrambled, nose now closer to her left ear than it used to be. Her eyes were separated farther, eyebrows now out of line. I frowned. Tears formed in my eyes as Rose curled up tighter with a scream before going silent. The other teenagers gasped in shock.
"R-Rose?" one of the girls muttered, trying to step forward. Rose's blood began to leak from her ears, draining color from her face. I covered my mouth to muffle my scream.
I killed her.
"Mr. Coulson, is- is she dead?" another student spoke up. The older man's eyes softened in sadness as he looked down at the dead girl.
"It- it appears so. We'll see when doctors check her over," he responded but I knew the answer. You know, the answer that hadn't been sweetened with hope.
I killed her.
"She's dead! (Y/n) killed Rose!" a boy shouted with both anger and grief. I recognized him as Rose's boyfriend.
"I-I'm sorry. I wa- was just trying to help," I explained, begging for someone to forgive me. But how could anyone forgive me if I couldn't forgive myself, "She was gonna touch a mixture of chemicals for a dare. But those chemicals would have melted her hand. I- it was instinct. I- I don't know what I did... but I did." I looked at my shaking hands that still radiated a glowing light.
"You're a monster!"
"(Y/n), listen to me," Mr. Coulson walked over in my direction, "I can help you. You have special powers, and I can help you control them. This- this won't happen again, I just need you to trust me."
I nodded and finally let the tears fall down my cheeks.
*MEETING DAY*
"Mr. Coulson, what if I mess up?" I asked, nervously wringing my hands. He smiled down at me and pat me on the shoulder.
"These guys are professionals, Honey," he comforted, "You'll do great."
I nodded, and stepped through the doors, followed by Mr. Coulson. The Avengers sat at a long table, their conversations silenced as they noticed me. I put my chin up a little, trying to not look like a fool.
I was failing.
"Miss (L/N)," Captain America greeted with a polite nod.
"Mr. Captain America, sir," I cringed as soon as the words came from my mouth. Great start already.
He chuckled a little, "Call me Steve."
I nodded, a blush coming to my cheeks.
"Take a seat, we have business to attend to," Mr. Stark spoke up. I obeyed and sat by Ms. Romanoff. She gave me a small smile, which I gratefully returned.
"(Y/n) here needs to learn how to control her powers," Mr. Coulson spoke for me. I nodded along, hoping I wouldn't have to talk.
"You're fifteen, right?" Mr. Stark asked. I nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Stark, I'm fifteen," I agreed.
"Yeah, I think I have a good guardian for you in mind," he smiled slightly before talking to his A.I., "FRIDAY, would you bring in the kid for me?"
"Yes, sir."
I furrowed my eyebrows, curious of who this 'kid' was. I waited patiently, trying not to read the Avengers minds. Which took more effort than it should have.
Soon enough, the A.I. spoke up again, "Sir, Mr. Parker has arrived."
"Bring him in," Mr. Stark responded, his tone clearly bored. The doors opened and a small boy walked in with a bounce in his step.
"Mr. Stark, I had to miss a Calculus test for this," Mr. Parker spoke before noticing all of the Avengers. He immediately tensed up and glanced at everyone, his eyes finally landing on mine. He grinned awkwardly, which came across as actually really cute. I smiled warmly, finally feeling comfortable with someone. But the feeling suddenly turned to worry, knowing he would never like a monster like me.
"(Y/n), this is Peter. Pete, this is (Y/n). You're her new guardian."
