"Focus, (Y/n)!" Peter shouted from behind me.
"Well maybe I could if you stopped yelling at me!" I yelled playfully in return.
My hands were out in front of me, white light shining from them. Concentrating on the block, I tried to correctly teleport it for the eighth time. It disappeared and reappeared in my hands, and I quickly prayed for the best. Looking it over, side by side, I realized I had finally done it. The block was the same shape, no deformities, same color, same texture. I cheered in victory and turned to show Peter.
"Peter! Pete, I did it!" I cried with joy, letting him look at the wood in my hand. He jumped excitedly for me.
"I knew you could do it!" he encouraged and wrapped him arms around me. I tensed. He had never hugged me before. It had only been five weeks, but still. He quickly backed away, rubbing his neck with embarrassment.
"S-sorry," he added. I smiled shyly before hugging him again.
"I liked it," I mumbled, putting my head in the crook of his neck, "Pete, I did it.. if only I could have done it for Rose."
At that, Peter backed up a little, still holding my arms, "Rose?"
I widened my eyes in realization that I hadn't yet told him about the accident, "Shoot. Well.. when I found out I had powers.. I... I killed someone. She was about to touch something that would have really hurt her, so I teleported her away from it. But.. but when she came back with me.. she was jumbled up. Apparently her organs had switched places in the process and she.. she died almost instantly. Her screams, Pete... her screams still echo in my head."
Peter was silent for a minute, and I shamefully let tears roll back down my face.
"I had gone to her funeral. Mr. Coulson had found a way to cover the story with a car crash, and helped erase the witnesses memories. How he did it, I don't know, but I'm grateful for him. Rose's parents were a mess so her two older brothers spoke instead. They were both football players, extremely popular.. and never had I seen them so sad. Never had I seen anyone so sad. The guilt still eats me alive," I finished.
I expected the worst.. maybe a slap on the face or just being ignored. I wasn't sure. But he surprised me when he wrapped his arms back around me and let me melt into his chest. I was confused, but his scent calmed me.
"Hey, hey, it was an accident," he comforted, rubbing my back, "We all regret things. My uncle...my uncle died because of me. I could have saved him- but I didn't. You know... he always said with great power comes great responsibility. I always thought it was kinda cheesy, but it's true. We both have great powers... and therefore we have the world's responsibilities on our shoulders. And its our job to be okay with that. We can't save everyone sometimes..."
I nodded slightly, shocked that he could relate. He was so kind.. so gentle.. and his uncle died in front of him.
"Peter.. thank you," I whispered.
"You're welcome," he responded before grabbing the block again, "I think we've done enough for today... wanna go home and watch a movie?"
I nodded with a grin, "I would love to."
